Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Jan Rutta is recovering from core-muscle surgery.

His recovery time is expected to be 8-10 weeks, which means he should have time to prepare for training camp in September.

The team announced that the operation was performed earlier this week in St. Louis.

Rutta, 32, signed as a free agent from Tampa Bay last summer and had three goals and six assists in 56 games with the Penguins.

He played the right side, primarily on the No. 3 pairing, and averaged 17 minutes, seven seconds of ice time.

Rutta’s surgery was done by Dr. Michael Brunt at the Center for Advanced Medicine in St. Louis, in collaboration with Dr. Dharmesh Vyes, the Penguins’ head team physician.
