Dan’s Daily: More Opinions on Dubas; How Penguins Get Younger

Pittsburgh Penguins, Sidney Crosby, Ryan Graves

The Pittsburgh Penguins and president of hockey operations/GM Kyle Dubas dominated the 24-hour news cycle. From Jake Guentzel’s future to Dubas’s admitted failure to find a shakeup trade and the Penguins’ desire to get younger, it’s all under the microscope and fueling the NHL trade talk. Elsewhere in the Daily, Auston Matthews is on a goal-scoring heater that would make Alex Ovechkin blush. Philadelphia is starting to get playoff fever and look down on the Devils, Islanders, and Penguins, as the Penguins lost more ground in the playoff race Wednesday night.

I thought Dubas’s presser was quite interesting, though I was in the minority. He gave enough signals and words beyond the platitudes that I think we have a pretty good idea of what’s to come.

Also, it does indeed appear that Dubas will keep Jake Guentzel if the Penguins are in the playoff race. Trade him if they are not. Despite all of the noise and debate, just remember your buddy Dan told you until he was blue in the face that keeping him for a playoff run, only trading him if they were out, was the most likely scenario.

I feel like in the social media age, too many people judge opinions or projections based on popularity, not accuracy, eh?

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: First, the surprising news (at least to me). The Penguins needed a spot, and they waived Colin White.

I defend Jansen Harkins against the over-the-top criticism, but between the two, that was certainly a choice.

PHN+: There’s one place where there is no Penguins trade talk. No admitted knowledge of such and no desire to know. Dave Molinari put it bluntly to the Penguins players.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The full Dubas. From Guentzel’s future with the club to the shakeup trades he tried to make and what the future would look like. It was a wide-ranging presser, and even though he said his answers would be unsatisfying, I think he answered the bell and answered the important Penguins questions.

There are problems with the Penguins’ path. Do all of those no-trade clauses equal no Penguins trades?

PHN Video: And here’s a new feature I’m testing — a single-issue video. Fire Mike Sullivan? Lord knows our comments section is full of that sentiment. So, we put it to the test and evaluated the Penguins’ coach on three criteria.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

TSN video: The boys at TSN radio were joined by Daren Dreger. They spent a healthy 12 minutes on Dubas and the Penguins. How do the Penguins get younger?

32 Thoughts: An attempted shakeup trade. Elliotte Friedman also devoted a healthy portion of his latest 32 Thoughts to Dubas and the Penguins trade chatter.

TSN: Auston Matthews is the fastest to 50 goals in a season since Mario Lemieux did 50 in 50 three decades ago. He has 151 goals in his last 181 games. Just…wow.

Perhaps we should be watching Matthews, not Ovechkin, chase Gretzky. He’s going to score 70 this year.

On the ice…

Philly Hockey Now: The gap grows. The Chicago Blackhawks couldn’t get it done. Samuel Ersson played well in the net, and Morgan Frost is defending like his job depends on it. Get the latest from the Philadelphia Flyers win.

A golden road to the playoffs. The Penguins lost. New Jersey lost. And the Flyers playoff hopes grow.

Montreal Hockey Now: The Penguins should have a leg up tonight against. The Buffalo Sabres won a hard-fought game against the Montreal Canadiens last night.

New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils continue to shuffle the deck chairs on the Titanic, demoting goalie Akira Schmid and recalling a rookie from the AHL. The latest Devils goalie moves.

NYI Hockey Now: The Islanders beat the Penguins, and optimism grew. Can they get back into the playoff race? Things haven’t taken off like they hoped after making the coaching change, but now it’s go-time for the New York Islanders.
