Pittsburgh Penguins live chat

Matt Gajtka of Pittsburgh Sports Live and our Editor-in-Chief Dan Kingerski sat down for a back and forth the morning after the Pittsburgh Penguins were embarrassed by the New York Islanders 2-0. The guys also looked ahead to a three-game set against the Philadelphia Flyers.

In this new regular show that the boys will be massaging and upgrading, Dan and Matt talked about the penalty kill struggles, the power play futility and tried to answer the big question.

“What is wrong with the Pittsburgh Penguins?”

Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan also flashed his frustration on Sunday night. His brusque press conference lasted 1:56 and included a couple of curt answers.

The Penguins penalty kill has slipped to 29th, ahead of only the lowly Detroit Red Wings and New Jersey Devils. The Penguins ceded a pair of power-play goals on Sunday.

“We are what we are. We’re giving up too many goals there. It’s not good enough,” was a terse Mike Sullivan response to one query.

The Penguins are 11-8-1 and are in fifth place of the MassMutual East Division. The team is tied for the fewest regulation wins in the division with four. The top four teams in the division have at least seven. The Islanders have 11.

Dan and Matt also looked ahead on the Pittsburgh Penguins schedule. This week, the Penguins have three matchups vs. Philadelphia Flyers. Matt was down on the Flyers because of their Corsi, while Dan offered a different take and reasons for Philadelphia’s low shot totals.

Philadelphia is two points ahead of the Penguins in the East with two games in hand.

Dan and Matt sparing over advanced metrics? Some things never change. Enjoy the chat. Stop by every morning or join us live on YouTube at 8:30 a.m. on the morning after games. It’s a brand new show we hope you’ll enjoy.
