Penguins Live Chat: UFA Prices, Possible Pens Offseason Outcomes

Published

on

The Pittsburgh Penguins’ offseason could feature significant changes or bigger salaries. Star players could leave, star players could arrive, and stars could stay.

And that’s before we get to the role players and backups.

Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin have not yet re-signed. Info is slow going regarding Rickard Rakell, Danton Heinen and Kasperi Kapanen, too. We’ll dissect all of those decisions, as well as what Penguins GM Ron Hextall could do to replace departing players.

According to Cap-Friendly.com, the Penguins have just over $23 million to spend, however, Hextall generally asks for silence from his negotiating partners. So, what numbers are being tossed about are still largely unknown.

Arguably, two post seasons in a row were sunk by sub-par goaltending.

Is the current climate in the organization one of ‘injuries happen and you cant expect league average from a third string backup’ or ‘Hextall didn’t do enough at the position’?

You hit the most compelling case for keeping Letang…short term contract…$10MM is just begging for more 1 and done…the Bottom 6 needs a near rebuild…and that’s $8MM, minimum right there…
