PHN Penguins Live Postgame; DeSmith Strong, Pens Lose Script in Carolina, 3-2 (OT)

Published

The PHN Pittsburgh Penguins postgame show and chat. Join PHN Editor-in-Chief Dan Kingerski after the Penguins game against the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena. The Penguins survived a late penalty in regulation but couldn’t kill one in OT as Carolina beat the Penguins 3-2 in OT at PNC Arena.

Dan goes the two things the Penguins stopped doing that allowed Carolina back into the game.

The Penguins earned a 2-0 lead after a great first period, and goals by Jake Guentzel and Sidney Crosby. However, they hung by a thread in the second period. Carolina thoroughly dominated the middle period and outshot the Penguins 14-8, and outchanced them 8-2.

Penguins backup goalie Casey DeSmith was very good, especially in the second period. He made several difficult saves to maintain the Penguins lead. Danton Heinen led all players with five shots through two periods, including four scoring chances.

Dan will break down the game including the Penguins’ second-period collapse, DeSmith, the Metro Division, and what we could see at the NHL trade deadline. Dan will also circle one player that hockey circles are chattering the Penguins could be pursuing.

And, of course, we’ll talk about the Kris Letang penalty in OT which cost the Pittsburgh Penguins the game. Was it fair?

Have a watch, join in. The show begins at 10:40 p.m. Where else would you rather be?

We saw tonight why it would be a huge mistake to expect a lot of this team in the playoffs. Malkin and Letang (and Kapanen) don’t have the mental capacity for extended postseason success. They’re destined to make a fatal mistake at some point. One can cost you a game, and one game can cost you a series

What exactly did Malkin do? Other than be born Russian and be the pens leading scorer in cup runs?

Stick to the script

If you watched the game, you saw Geno The Turnover Machino (team-worst -2, two SOG, team-worst two bad giveaways). And the too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty late in a tie game was the classic Malkin brain cramp. We’ve seen this fish many times before — All-World one game, all bad the next.

I wish I could disagree. they do know how to play winning hockey at times. their play in the first period proved it. Intensity, high puck circulation, passing and moving to open space in the attacking third. Then everyone defending and clearing the middle of the ice in their zone. One could argue they were tired with back to back games and probably true however the playoffs demand both mental and physical stamina and I’m not sure they can sustain successful energy. shuffling lines seems pointless if players aren’t engaged for 60 minutes. again I say this is also a… Read more »

Yes Trocheck skated away but then turned back into Letang…when he did that the whistle blew…both should have gone…there is no one on the planet who thinks otherwise…
