Pittsburgh Penguins game, vs. San Jose Sharks

After a string of sloppy games and uneven efforts, the Pittsburgh Penguins needed a solid game and a win against the lowly San Jose Sharks.

Fortunately for their playoff hopes, they got half.

The Penguins beat San Jose, 3-1, at SAP Arena Tuesday. Better still for the Penguins, by virtue of the Washington Capitals’ regulation loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, the Penguins now have the first wild-card spot, one point ahead of Washington with three games in hand.

And by virtue of the New York Islanders’ shootout loss to the Ottawa Senators, the Penguins lead New York by two points, with a staggering four games in hand.

Get the game details in Dave Molinari’s Penguins recap.

But if you’re judging the Penguins’ play, it was hardly a good night. Despite two points, they wore their problems like a yellow roadcrew vest, for all to see.
