Dan’s Daily: Penguins Cut Hopefuls; Will NHL Finally Move Coyotes?

Published

on

Pittsburgh Penguins, Alex Nylander

The Pittsburgh Penguins returned six players to the AHL and waived a couple more Thursday, including winger Alex Nylander. Coach Mike Sullivan gushed over Austin Wagner, and the Penguins will take their NHL lineup to Buffalo for the final preseason game tonight. Also in the NHL news, J.T. Miller is trying to move past the turmoil. Will the NHL expand, or will they finally move the Arizona Coyotes? The NHL Draft might be at the new (and impressive) Sphere in Las Vegas, and which hopefuls or stiffs will complete the Islanders’ top line?

I don’t understand the feet-dragging involving the Arizona market. I’ve been there. The folks don’t care. The weather is great nine months a year, and people have other things to do. It’s not the market the NHL and many others thought it would be when they invested almost 30 years ago. Let’s move on.

I shuffle off to Buffalo later this morning. It will be an interesting game because the Penguins regulars have not yet looked cohesive, and the power play hasn’t exactly looked like a man advantage but instead a perimeter free skate. There’s a lot of work to be done before Tuesday, and I’m quite interested to see how much they can get done tonight.

It would be nice to stop for a Beef on Weck. We’ll see how much time the fates allow. I’m slowly building a comfort food repertoire except for Columbus, where I don’t like the local pizza (at all); D.C., where there isn’t comfort food because the restaurants are too upscale; and Long Island because, well, nothing is original or convenient there.

Pittsburgh Penguins:

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: First, the Penguins news. Players were returned to the WBS Penguins, and the team waived Alex Nylander.

I don’t suppose many readers who were angry or argued against my grading Nylander lower than they liked will concede I was just being honest?

Mike Sullivan was effusive when he talked about the energy and “juice” that Austin Wagner can bring.

PHN+: Simple question. What is Mike Sullivan’s agenda for tonight’s Penguins game?

Steelers Now:

A key starter was added to the Steelers injury report.

Lamar Jackson and the new-look Ravens offense are starting to click. Our experts put it on the chalkboard–How the Steelers defense can slow it down.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now:

O’Neil Cruz is on the verge of taking a significant step.

Our beat writer Danny Demelio, who did a very good job this year, laid out his primary takeaways from the Pittsburgh Pirates season.

NHL News & National Hockey Now:

NYI Hockey Now: Here’s the million-dollar question. Who will skate with Mathew Barzal and Bo Horvat for the New York Islanders?

Philly Hockey Now: The final tuneup for the Flyers, and things looked pretty good as they spanked the Islanders. The Philadelphia Flyers breakdown.

Sportsnet: J.T. Miller is trying- though perhaps my profession won’t let him- to move on from last season’s turmoil and the NHL trade rumors.

TSN: Will the NHL expand, or must they finally just move the Arizona Coyotes? And, consider me down for this — the NHL Draft could be held at the Sphere in Las Vegas?

Trip to Vegas? Yeah, I’m in. I miss my Nathan’s hot dogs, In-N-Out Burger, NY NY pizza, chicken parm at Bugsy’s, and…the horseradish on the prime rib at Four Queens. Does anyone do a good prime rib in Pittsburgh??
