Dan’s Daily: Waiting on the Penguins, Complicated Chicago Legacies

Published

on

Pittsburgh Penguins, NHL News, Jonathan Toews

The dismantling of the Chicago Blackhawks is nearly complete. Two stalwarts remain from the three Stanley Cup championships, and Jonathan Toews is pondering his future with the team. Without No. 1 center production, but premium salary cap hit, injuries, and illness, his has become a complicated legacy. The LA Kings will honor the recently retired Dustin Brown in very permanent ways. Jesse Puljujarvi signed a one-year tender but NHL trade rumors are swirling. Mike Vellucci has just missed on a couple of head coaching gigs, Brian Boyle wants to keep playing hockey, and are the Pittsburgh Penguins an option?

It was also Day 1 of parliamentary hearings for Hockey Canada.

Pittsburgh Penguins / Steelers & Pirates

First–follow the new Twitter account for all of the Penguins, Steelers, and Pirates coverage. All the Now sites are in one place: Sports Now Group Pgh.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Mike Vellucci has just missed on at least two head coach jobs. What of the Matthew Tkachuk trade, and is Brian Boyle an option for the Pittsburgh Penguins?

Q&A time! Go here to submit your questions about the team, offseason, and what size personal pizza I can eat in eight minutes. Pittsburgh Penguins Q&A.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now: Dead center. 416 feet. Oneil Cruz. Watch this — Pittsburgh Pirates.

Pirates pitcher Jose Quintana is drawing some real heat as the MLB trade deadline draws near. The Yankees and White Sox are interested. Pirates trade rumors.

Steelers Now: It’s heaven for Steelers fans. There are more than a half dozen new stories on SteelersNow.com. It was Day 1 of training camp in Latrobe. Here’s a weird one — the QBs live together. Pittsburgh Steelers QB competition.

No helicopters and stretch limos. No fire trucks. It was just guys parking the car and getting ready for work. The Steelers are understated this year. Here are the sites and sounds of Day 1. Pittsburgh Steelers Camp.

NHL News & National Hockey Now

Detroit: Oh no. This is the worst story you’ll read today. Bobby Ryan, who won the 2021 Masterton Trophy after returning from treatment for substance abuse, was arrested Monday at the Nashville airport. Detroit Red Wings news.

The Athletic Chicago ($): Our old friend Mark Lazerus went one-on-one with Jonathan Toews, who delivered the scoops. Toews has battled injury, unspecified health problems and delivered three Stanley Cups. As he nears the end of his career, does he want to stay in Chicago? Ummmm, well, not really?

The NHL trade rumors await. Also–these questions will be asked of Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang in three years.

Vegas Hockey Now: It’s a hard-knock life. No cap space but significant needs. More problematic cap management? Updated cap situation for the Vegas Golden Knights.

NY Post: Rangers RFA Kappa Kakko could be had for a second-round pick if someone tenders an offer sheet. But no takers?

Jesse Puljujarvi:

I got a few questions about Puljujarvi for tomorrow’s Q&A segment. Other teams and fans are asking about him, as well.

NYI: The current hot potato of the NHL trade market. Does Puljujarvi make sense for the goal-starved New York Islanders?

Montreal: Jimmy Murphy (who covers Montreal and Boston for us) writes that Montreal should revisit Puljujarvi. Montreal Canadiens trade talk.

Philly Hockey Now: A bad break for the Flyers and top prospect Bobby Brink. He needs hip surgery for a torn labrum. He’ll be out well into next season. More Philadelphia Flyers hard luck.

I know, I know, Pittsburgh Penguins fans won’t shed a tear for Philly, but they are cursed since firing Ron Hextall. Nothing has gone right under Chuck Fletcher.

Washington Hockey Now: Spots are up for grabs. New assistant coach Scott Allen is bringing some energy and competition to his end of the bench and the Washington Capitals PK.

Florida Hockey Now: Matthew Tkachuk. Hates the Edmonton Oilers. But not hates the Tampa Bay Lightning even more. Florida Panthers trade afterglow.

Sportsnet: Day 1 of the Hockey Canada hearings in Parliament. What we learned.

NHL.com: The LA Kings will retire Dustin Brown’s No. 23 and unveil a statue after the gritty forward retired this summer.

Seattle Times: Edzo left Chicago (ahead of Toews and Patrick Kane?) He’s now the lead analyst for the Seattle Kraken.

It would take a lead analyst role for anyone to afford to live in Seattle! Good lord, we looked at relocating writers there and were astounded by rent prices. What is happening with rent in these cities??? Jimmy Murphy just rented an apartment closer to Boston and shared with me his rent price. I nearly spit out my coffee. Dear Pittsburgh, don’t you dare! Dear out-of-towners, we’re a cheap, humble city. Stop throwing stupid money at houses. Stop being jagoffs. Please and thanks.
