The NHL trade deadline is just over one week away, which is plenty of time for the Pittsburgh Penguins to heed the lessons of their recent past. Better players don’t always make a better team. Crazy, but true.

The Penguins rode a wave of momentum, speed, and youthful enthusiasm to the 2016 Stanley Cup. The Penguins were at their best in 2019 with a lineup wrecked by injuries before the entire squad was bounced like a rubber ball in a four-game sweep by the New York Islanders in Round One. This season, the team had something special cooking with a handful of substitutes, too.

On Friday morning, Penguins GM Ron Hextall figuratively drew a red line in the middle of his team’s season when PHN asked about needing more energy or toughness.
