There’s a certain gallows humor to debating which player is on his way out. Most hockey players are very good to us dirty media types and are otherwise good people. Speculating about their employment goes with the job. So which Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman will Ron Hextall put on the NHL trade block? Montreal Canadiens trade winds are swirling around Jeff Petry, still. What is the Calgary Flames Plan B after losing Johnny Gaudreau? And the Washington Capitals signed a young scorer.

And I’m being lauded/criticized for my evening column on Ron Hextall’s tenure. That usually means I found the mark.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: What can the Penguins expect when Hextall puts one of his defensemen on the NHL trade market? Dave Molinari ponders which one will it be? Pittsburgh Penguins trade talk.

Hextall has been flawless in his acquisitions. From Mark Friedman for nothing. Jeff Carter for a couple of picks, to Rickard Rakell, every new player has worked out. Opinion: however, this week, Hextall allowed himself to be handcuffed to the Pittsburgh Penguins core.

PHN+: I thoroughly enjoyed the first rookie camp in three years. I saw a few players who could help the Penguins. A few diamonds in the rough. And I saw a couple of prospects who must keep working. The full breakdown of the Penguins prospects.

NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now:

Vancouver Hockey Now: Buried in Rob Simpson’s story with Patrik Allvin and the Canucks was the lede for Penguins fans — The Canucks have cooled on any trade for a defenseman. Vancouver Canucks trade chatter.

Calgary Hockey Now: OK, now what? After the departure of Johnny Gaudreau, what is Plan B for the Calgary Flames?

Flames fans are dealing with the loss of Gaudreau … with anger. Calgary Flames reaction.

Montreal Hockey Now: The NHL trade winds are blowing briskly in Montreal. But there’s no deal for Jeff Petry yet. GM Kent Hughes is holding firm–here’s the whole story: Montreal Canadiens trade talk.

Sportsnet: Who are the NHL free agency winners and losers? Sportsnet weights in.

Washington Hockey Now: I love the Capitals’ signing of Dylan Strome. They added second-line center insurance. Youth. Sammi Silber called it “a slam dunk,” but there are salary cap implications. Here’s the deal — Washington Capitals analysis.

NYI Hockey Now: There is a lament on Long Island. The Islanders were supposed to be a finalist for Johnny Gaudreau but lost to Columbus?! The Metro Division got stronger, but the Islanders did not. Stefen Rosner pokes at the New York Islanders’ whiff.

Philly Hockey Now: Dry your eyes, Penguins fans. Sam Carchidi flatly calls GM Chuck Fletcher’s performance this week “a failure.” Ouch! Here comes the tank job. Hard-hitting Philadelphia Flyers column.

Colorado: Where will Nazem Kadri go? Adrian Dater reported Kadri “wants” to stay in Colorado, but as of last night, everyone was still waiting. Here’s the full story —  Colorado Avalanche analysis.

San Jose: Goodbyes are never easy. Brent Burns said goodbye to San Jose after his trade to Carolina. San Jose Sharks coverage.
