Dan’s Daily: Hilarious Celebration; Oilers Survive; Penguins Offseason Don’ts

Pittsburgh Penguins news, Memorial Cup celebration, NHL trade talk

The Edmonton Oilers somehow won Game 6 and advanced to the Stanley Cup Final despite getting just 10 shots on net. That’s it, 10, and they beat the Dallas Stars for McDavid’s first chance at the Cup. It won’t be easy against Florida. The Utah Yeti/Mammoths are going to have more money to spend on free agents or load up the cart at the NHL trade market than any team since the beginning of the salary cap era. And we give the Pittsburgh Penguins a list of off-season do-nots.

Seriously, 10 shots?! And for what it’s worth, I love the idea of the Utah Saints, but a religious connection to the Latter-Day folks and the NFL franchise of the same name probably makes Yeti a much easier sell.

We had some real fun last night on WPXI’s Final Word. I’ll have to post parts of the show because we talked some Penguins, and Paul Zeise, in a tuxedo jacket, had us in stitches. It was a high-energy show, but when I watched the show at 11:30, I realized I had a small cowlick. It drove me crazy, and I couldn’t focus on anything else.

First-world problems, eh?

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: A few desired changes for the Penguins have gained traction among fans, but not everything that is getting popular should happen. Those things get discussed, but these are the three “just say no” items of the Penguins’ offseason.

NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now

Sportsnet: Who says hockey players are superstitious? I find them to be salt of the earth, coldly rational guys who would never …. oh, wait. With a trip to the Stanley Cup Final on the line Sunday, Connor McDavid probably smelled a bit ripe–he wore the same suit for the third game in a row.

The Athletic ($): Get this–the Utah Yeti, or whatever their name is going to be, will have $40 million in salary cap space to spend on July 1. Arizona couldn’t spend to the cap, but now Utah has the money to be competitive. So, how do they plan to use the treasure trove of salary cap space?

NY Times: Our old buddy Mark Lazerus (who began his career at the Washington Observer-Reporter) wrote the heartbreaking story on Sunday night. Dallas fell short of the Stanley Cup Final despite absolutely dominating Edmonton. It very well could have been Joe Pavelski’s last game.

Pavelski has spent his career on the doorstep, first with the San Jose Sharks and then with Dallas, but has never lifted the Cup.

Philly Hockey Now: With Florida in their second consecutive Stanley Cup Final, Philadelphia fans are getting worked up. A decade ago, Philadelphia had a choice between two goalies. Ilya Bryzgalov or Sergei Bobrovsky. Like the Nazis in Last Crusade, the Flyers did not choose wisely. You can revel in what might be THE worst-ever Philadelphia Flyers trade.

Montreal Hockey Now: A couple of years ago, Lane Hutson was our pick, but the Penguins went with Owen Pickering. Montreal picked Hutson, who then dominated college hockey for two seasons at Boston University. Here’s a prospect that could fall to the Penguins, but the Montreal Canadiens might swipe him late in the first round–it’s Hutson’s younger brother, Cole Hutson.

And Montreal prospect Owen Beck helped Saginaw lift the Memorial Cup. Watch this celebration–Saginaw’s first-ever Cup, and they did it as the home team. I laughed pretty hard at the celebration, and I think the boys did, too.

TSN Video: And the NHL trade chatter surrounding Martin Necas hasn’t been heard from in a couple of days. However, a couple of new teams have emerged from north of the border. The Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens have entered the chat.

Are we sure McDavid doesn’t just have a closet full of those suits like Superman?

Not sure about the nickname, but I think Utah Coyotes rolls off the tongue better than Arizona Coyotes, however they are probably looking for an entire re-brand. Goaltending = important but flukey.

The owner of the Coyotes retained the name, colors, etc. Utah is not able to use any of that, nor do they want to

Dallas dominated the game and Edmonton only scored because of special teams.. Florida might win the cup in 5 games…
