Penguins Postgame: Readers Speak, Sharp Elbows for Karlsson, Malkin

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Pittsburgh Penguins salvaged a point. They were nearly skated out of the barn against the Carolina Hurricanes in the first period, but goalie Tristan Jarry kept them in the game.

The Penguins scored a pair of third period goals to force overtime before losing 3-2 at PNC Arena.

We took reader questions and addressed a few statements. Fans seemed to be split between praising the comeback and slamming the necessity for it.

Must read: PHN Report Card, Tristan Jarry Saves Their Bacon.

We also get into the awful power play performance and the struggles of Erik Karlsson and Evgeni Malkin. The young players were not unscathed, either.

I think of particular interest, I also offered a hard look at the Penguins’ game–how they play Carolina and the system breakdowns. The Penguins get sucked into Carolina’s man-to-man system, but their mistakes are too great.

We get into all of it. And there’s a PHN+ coupon code at the end. Like and comment. I read them all.

Unfortunately Jarry still plays like a back up goalie. I’m not sure he’ll ever reach the caliber of a true starter.

Can’t disagree Jarry is wildly inconsistent and can be maddening but he was not the reason they lost that game. You can say he should have had that goal in OT and that’s fair but a poor line change by 87 lead to that even happening. And Jarry was the only reason this team weathered the first period. Jarry has his warts but this game wasn’t one of them

You are the same morons that called to trade fleury. Only reason we got a point at the canes is from Jarry.

I just want to know what Eric Karlssons comment meant? Did he mean coaching or his teammates when asked about the power play and he said something to the effect of I have a few ideas of what is wrong, but I’ll keep that to myself. This team doesn’t make sense. They have almost the same record as Washington with a much better goal differential. Something is rotten in Denmark I tell ya!

If Sullivan is afraid of hurting feelings and egos and won’t break up the PATHETIC POWER PLAY unit then maybe it’s time to release him!!! Also why are they so passive in OT situations???

Malkin’s got to be moved off the PP. maybe Karlsson too. The PP has to run through Crosby down low. They will never be consistently good passing the puck around the top of the zone.

Watching this team is like an evening at the Improv comical and a total joke. All the talent this team has and they stink like a stink bug in OT and Shootouts. And Jarry is still a sub par goalie.

My Pens since 67 but they are old and slow and soft. Dubas this team isn’t going anywhere. Mediocre at best. Make some moves the sooner the better.
