Penguins Practice: Malkin Participates, But Not Fully
Injured Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin seemed to be full contact and flying around the ice at practice Friday at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, but he did not resume regular line rushes in his normal spot at second-line center, meaning his return might not be imminent.
After playing in each of the Penguins’ first 41 games, collecting eight goals and 24 assists, Malkin has missed the past two games because of an upper-body injury. He was listed as a game-time decision for Thursday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers, a 6-3 win, but he did not take part in the warmups. Overall, he is listed as day-to-day.
While he did not take regular line rushes, he mixed in a few times in his normal spot. He also did not participate with either power-play unit, and he stayed on the ice for extra work after practice.
Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said Malkin’s status has not changed.
The Penguins play back-to-back home games this weekend, Saturday against the Ottawa Senators and Sunday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Before practice, injured forward Phil Tomasino skated along with defenseman Jack St. Ivany, who is assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League but is rehabbing an injury in Pittsburgh.
