Conversely, Boston missed out on a golden opportunity to further clutter the East Division standings and to put some distance between themselves and the New York Rangers. After winning six straight games, the Bruins have now lost two in a row, including that defensive struggle to the Penguins.

These two teams have played some of the best and most evenly matched hockey as any in the NHL this season. Boston won four of the first seven meetings. Six of those seven games have been low-scoring, grind-it-out affairs with the teams combining for five or fewer goals.

This is the final game of a five-game road trip for the Bruins which started out great with a pair of wins but has since leveled off with a pair of one-goal losses.

The prolific Pittsburgh Penguins offense wasn’t on display against the Bruins on Sunday afternoon. The team scored just one goal, that goal, which came from Jake Guentzel and was assisted by Sidney Crosby. They, along with fellow linemate Bryan Rust, now have a staggering 46 points in 13 April games.

If you think the Penguins are going to win tonight, you almost have to rely on their top line to score goals, as it seems they do in every game. And they all score pretty evenly (Guentzel has one more goal than both Crosby and Rust). It just so happens Rust has the best value to score in this one at +225.

He’s also due.

Rust has scored at least one goal against every opponent this season except Boston. This is the last game against the Bruins. Look for Sidney Crosby to find him and check off that box.

We liked this bet on Sunday. It didn’t hit, but we’re going back to the well again.

Why?

Every game is close between these two squads. If Boston is going to win, the Bruins are better off getting ahead than playing from behind. The Bruins are 19-5-3 when they score first and are a pedestrian 8-9-3 when their opponent scores first.

But here’s a new twist to this play. If you are an in-game bettor, the Bruins have not lost in regulation this season when leading after the first period or second period. So, even if this one is just a one-goal game after 20 minutes, it might be worth it to take the Bruins live. Even though it’s not a value play, it could be a nice parlay piece.

Weirdly, as close and low-scoring as the games have been between these two teams, only one of them has reached overtime — and that was way back in January during the first meeting of the season.

With both teams in playoff mode and locking it down even more than they usually would against one another, you have to expect this game to be a tight one-goal contest. And if that’s the case, the odds of it being tied at the end of regulation, especially with every point couting for playoff position, are greatly improved.

Considering you can more than triple your bet with this and not have to worry about which teams wins, it’s worth a flier, especially between such evenly-matched teams.

Boston needs this game a little more than Pittsburgh, but the same could have been said Sunday when the Penguins rose to the challenge. Still, the one thing that stands out here is that as good as the Pittsburgh offense has been for most of the season, especially in April, the Bruins seem to have an elixir to slow it down. This one slinks off to a shootout, and the Bruins escape with a narrow 3-2 win.
