Updated: Penguins Prospects Koivunen, Ponomarev Go Goal Crazy in WBS Game

The Pittsburgh Penguins knew Ville Koivunen could score. He put on a clinic Wednesday night in an American Hockey League game.
Koivunen had four goals, all in the first two periods, as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton put a 9-0 pasting on the visiting Hershey Bears. His fourth goal of the night was his 14th of the season.
The 21-year-old winger was a key piece in the return when the Penguins dealt winger Jake Guentzel to the Carolina Hurricanes. PHN had an updated scouting report on Koivunen just last week.
He was joined Wednesday by Vasily Ponomarev, who scored the game’s only goal in the third to polish off a hat trick, and goaltender Sergei Murashov, who stopped all 27 shots he faced. Ponomarev was another player acquired in the Guentzel trade. He now has 10 goals this season.
With the NHL Penguins staring fairly far up at the playoff cutoff, there could be players shipped out between now and the March 7 trade deadline, so it’s an ideal time for prospects hoping for a late-season call-up to shine. Ponomarev had no points in a three-game stint with the NHL Penguins earlier this season.
