Dan’s Daily: Huge TV Ratings; More Canucks Angst; Penguins Future

The Pittsburgh Penguins’ future is accelerating their future. That sentence should make absolutely no sense until you realize the current crop of Penguins prospects have a unique advantage that prior prospects did not. With some insider nuggets, our prospects analysis was particularly illuminating this weekend. Elsewhere in the Daily, Larry Brooks churned the NHL trade rumors with a big-time proposal and criticism of Alex Lafreniere. There’s angst in Vancouver after the org dished a contract to Marcus Pettersson but not Brock Boeser. And the Four Nations Face-Off drew massive TV numbers Saturday night.
I’d like to thank the good people in Wilkes-Barre for a nice few days. Since parking is free at Mohegan Arena, I switched hotels to the equally affordable Days Inn for a few days. The team will treat you well, and the arena people are just so darned friendly. It feels like you’re in the mid-west.
It does shock me that many of the players there know my name, and a few actually wanted to talk. I think I got an eye and earful and have a better understanding of the Penguins’ organization and the players’ potential. I also understand more about inner machinations than ever. Sunday’s piece was harsh, real, and optimistic all at once. I also think I wrote some of my best pieces this season on Saturday and Sunday. Thank you to the couple dozen people who subscribed last week! I splurged and went to Outback Steakhouse for a pregame dinner on Valentine’s Day. Perhaps splurge isn’t the right word there, but you don’t go to Wilkes-Barre for the food.

Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: If you missed last week, we got you covered. No, she doesn’t rhyme or diss Drake, but you can read Shelly Anderson’s weekly Penguins wrap.
PHN+: Off the record conversations, background chats, and scouting three pivotal games gave us a pretty good idea of what’s going on with the Penguins prospects. One prospect jumped the tracks this week and behaved poorly on the ice. Another is becoming the center of the group and, in my estimation, the future captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, but there’s a backstory there, too. Check out the 3 Penguins Thoughts with in-depth Penguins prospects analysis.
PHN+: Since it was Saturday, I did an exhaustive write-up with some help from the organization about exactly what you can expect–and it might be different from everyone’s expectations–from the Penguins’ top prospect Rutger McGroarty.
NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
NY Post: Lafreniere for Trevor Zegras? Larry Brooks ripped Lafreniere’s attitude in recent performances and writes maybe it’s time to swap underachiever for underachiever.
NOT TRUE–One of those big Instagram accounts did a viral meme this weekend reporting that I reported Erik Karlsson trade talks. That’s nice, except I didn’t report that. I simply noted the rising cap would make it easier if the two sides agreed a trade is best. When you see that stuff, send it to me so I can disabuse the audience.
Donnie & Dali: Some felt the Canucks’ contract for Marcus Pettersson was a slap in the face to Brock Boeser. The player wants to stay, but the team doesn’t like the price. Here’s the latest and what could go down with Boeser.
With Mitch Marner, Sam Bennett, and Brock Boeser available this summer, the Penguins’ current arc might be missing their best window to add the top-six players.
Philly Hockey Now: Like many others, Will James is enamored with the Four Nations tournament. Yeah, a lot of us are eating crow. James writes this is better than any All-Star Game could ever be.

4Nations, great success! This tournament should benefit the Pens, probably the Flyers and the Wild too. I wonder if there are any players on Team USA who would welcome the opportunity to come to PIT next season (via trade) and play under Sullivan? Maybe Dubas can accelerate his ‘Big Move’ phase to summer 2025? Cite the rising cap, free agent class, 4Nations and Sully’s system/philosophy. Not to mention playing with Crosby and Malkin.
This is the type of team Sully wants to coach. Very solid goaltending with a team oriented defensive game. You can win a lot of 2-1, 3-1 games that way.
“Play the right way” has meaning now that we can see it executed.
Is this Sully’s team or is the influence coming from Tortorella? The players were Guerin’s selection, this collection of players are not suited for the type of play we see in Pittsburgh under Sullivan. So which is it? Correct me if I’m wrong but when was the last time you saw a Sullivan influenced team play like this? Dan, next time you’re in WB/S, besides breaking your jinx on this team, did you attend yesterday’s win? Try driving north on 309 out of Wilkes Barre toward Dallas, Pa. Some excellent restaurants up that way, Fire and Ice and Tomasino’s to… Read more »
Thanks–I’ll probably ride my bike that way this summer. But no, I did not attend their win. I texted my apologies for bringing my jinx for three games!
If you need a team full of the country’s best superstars and the reigning Vezina winner for your system to finally work, then it’s not probably that great of a system
Wish it was five nations instead of four, purely for the enjoyment of watching good hockey.
I’d still want Russia to lose every game but I’d prefer to see them play.
If this is something they plan on annually or bi-annually, I’d be okay with 4Nations* as USA, Canada, Russia and Europe. While Europe is a continent, not a country, this way you can include some of the best players who’ve been excluded such as Draisaitl and Pastrnak. Have an individual country flag patch for each player representing their country on Team Europe’s jersey.
2028 will be the World Cup
By 2028, what will this world look like?
Screw the murdering russians. Keep ‘em banned from everything.
So should the US sports be banned from international competition for their roles in Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen, etc.? Or does that door only swing one way? Evgeni Malkin isn’t the one occupying Crimea, much like Jake Guentzel isn’t drone striking villages in the Middle East
If you add Russia, you could add Czech. And then it gets really fun.
I agree Dan based on their current arc. I feel you could add Rantanen to the mix of Marner, Bennett, and Boser (Not super warm on him-injury history) & perhaps Chychrun as a top 4 defender if these guys make it FA. I suspect they all will. The following year, FA crop seems alitte older and I doubt Mcdavid is gonna come here, lol.
USA/Canada was absolutely awesome, curious to see how the ratings compare to slam dunk contest
I wish the Pens had found a way to wrestle Boeser from the Nucks. He is 27 and could’ve been part of the future
