We’ll find out tomorrow. The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled forward Sam Lafferty on Saturday afternoon in advance of their game against Division-leading Washington Capitals on Sunday afternoon. But why?

It may seem strange the Penguins recalled Lafferty a after practice, which Patric Hornqvist missed to deal with a tooth problem, and two days after head coach Mike Sullivan explained why Lafferty wasn’t recalled after the bye week.

“For young players, it’s important that they play,” Sullivan said after practice on Thursday. Lafferty was playing reduced fourth line minutes with the Penguins before the All-Star break and bye week.

Lafferty, 24, has 10 points including six goals in 36 NHL games this season. In six AHL games this season, Lafferty has three goals, including a third period goal for the WBS Penguins on Friday night.

The Penguins currently have Andrew Agozzino and Anthony Angello in the lineup on an emergency recall basis. Angello made his NHL debut on Friday night. Lafferty was not listed as an emergency recall.

The Penguins begin a three-game road trip on Sunday in Washington D.C. They’ll finish the trip next week with games against Florida and Tampa Bay.
