Penguins Report Card: Pens Regressing Fast, Even Sullivan Discouraged

Pittsburgh Penguins, game analysis, Tristan Jarry

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins decided not to let down the 12,000-13,000 fans who showed up at PPG Paints Arena Tuesday. Instead of playing the stuff off their new album, they resorted to the greatest hits. The Penguins gave up a goal on the first shot of the game, limped to the end, and gave up a two-goal lead in the final eight minutes.

The Columbus Blue Jackets scored a pair of goals in the shootout and hit the post on the other against goalie Tristan Jarry and Columbus helped the Penguins rescue defeat from the jaws of victory.

For many, including those inside the locker room, the game was eerily similar–far too similar–to the debacles that lowlighted the first six weeks of the season.

For the record, that was the sixth time this season Jarry has surrendered a goal on the first shot. In fairness, Dmitri Voronkov was wide open feet from the net.

“It’s tough. There’s not much different I would do on that,” said Jarry before changing his answer, slightly. “That guy comes down there and shoots it … he has a lot of time, and he’s able to make that play quickly, and he’s able to get it through my legs. Obviously, it’s tough. It’s hard. I don’t think anybody wants the first shot to go in, but it’s something that I think if I defend a little better on it, maybe playing a little bit deeper, I think I could have that.”

PPG Paints Arena and the Penguins failed to attract thousands of fans to their seat Tuesday. Perhaps they were glued to their phones in the concourse or sought things more interesting, like watching paint dry. The Penguins found the energy for a mighty three shots on goal in the first period, further enticing the paltry crowd to disengage.

Fans and team were stuck in second gear. It wasn’t their day, their week, or month, or even their year.

The highlights to circle or analyze were few.

Michael Bunting scored a goal on an excuse-me assist from Sidney Crosby in the second period. Crosby fanned on a wrist shot, but it fluttered past defenders to the back post, where Bunting needed little effort to tap it in.

The teams picked up the pace in the second period, but neither was at its best. The Penguins held a less-than-commanding 11-10 edge in shots.

It wasn’t until the final 20 minutes the team began to look like it cared about the outcome. Suddenly, the Penguins’ strategy emerged. Xs and Os crystalized where once it looked more like drudgery.

Rickard Rakell got behind the Columbus defense on the first shift of the third period and cleanly beat Columbus goalie Elvis Merzlikins over the glove from the left dot.

After Rakell’s goal, the Penguins slowed the game not through apathy or heavy skates but by controlling it with a defensive structure.

And then, they succumbed to the second of their deadly vices. They wadded up and threw away a late third-period two-goal lead with head-scratching mistakes.

Unacceptably bad mistakes, including a botched handle by Jarry and defenseman Matt Grzelcyk and then confused defense by forwards racing back to the zone to theoretically help out.

Coach Mike Sullivan thought the referees gifted Columbus a late power play.

“(The call on Lizotte) was a headscratcher for me,” Sullivan said, then later added, “It was a stick lift.”

However, the previously unbeatable penalty kill suddenly looked 10-ply soft. Columbus netted a pair of power-play goals, including the tying goal during the power play earned on Lizotte’s slashing minor.

Yep, a 3-1 lead with victory approaching instead turned to overtime against a division rival against whom they’re fighting for the second wild-card spot. The Penguins gave Columbus a point and life by trying to coast to the end.

Then they gave Columbus another point by not finishing their chances in overtime. Relying on Jarry in the shootout is usually a bad idea, and it was again Tuesday as Columbus.

“It’s discouraging because the irony of it is, is we give up two goals and the third period was our best period that we played all night,” Sullivan said. “Having said that, you know, our penalty kill wasn’t nearly as good as it’s been. That’s part of it … And, you know, I just felt like we didn’t control the momentum the way we were capable of in those last minutes. And so they get it within one. Then they get a power play, and anything can happen.”

Penguins Xs and Os

We’ll skip the first period. It’s not useful in polite public discourse. Good luck to coach Mike Sullivan’s video team in finding instances of hockey that could be analyzed.

We’ll skip to the third period, in which the Penguins used stretch passes early in the period to open the game. From there, the Penguins were able to (sorry, Dan Bylsma) get to their game. They began to work the puck in the low zone, force Columbus to defend, and apply more pressure.

It looked like they would pull away.

Oh those mistakes.

“No (we didn’t relax). Mistakes, mistakes. And I don’t think any of us, any of the leads that we’ve given up, has been about us taking an exhale and being nonchalant.”

Playing well for only a genuine 10 minutes isn’t a recipe for victory. I cannot say what happened to the team’s mindset. It was dialed in and proper in the weeks leading to the holiday break.

Since then, it seems like someone rebooted the computer, and we’re back to Square One. The Penguins are 1-2-3 in six games. At worst, they should be 3-2-1.

Penguins Grades

Team: D

We’ll give them a few points for the much better play in the first 10 minutes of the third and something resembling professional, though uninspired, play in the second.

“We gave ourselves a chance. Yeah (long pause). It stinks,” Rakell said. “You know, we fought back in this game. And yeah, there’s we lose another shootout.”

They may have deserved a better fate only because Columbus wasn’t any better, but that’s not a reason to smile.

Tristan Jarry: D

He didn’t have to make many tough saves. He could have stopped all three Columbus goals, but any of the three would have been exemplary saves. He was the turnover culprit on the second goal, too.

His shootout work continues to be abysmal.

Penalty Kill: F

Teams used the break to dig into video and diagnose the Penguins’ PK. Or the Penguins’ PK is regressing to the mean. Whatever the root cause, the Penguins’ penalty killing is being exposed by seam passes, open men getting good looks, and uncovered players near the net.

Rakell-Crosby-Rust: B

They have become the liferaft on which the team is floating. Rakell scored a pair of goals and the line was the only line to have more than a brief moment of offensive flair.

Sidney Crosby also set the record for most faceoff wins ever.

Cody Glass: B?

It’s hard to evaluate Glass because he operates almost exclusively under the radar. He was shoved into second-line duty but the line largely controlled their opponents. The second line had a muted five scoring chances, but allowed zero.

Meant to be about Glass. On a bigger, more physical team, he’d be a good fourth liner. Maybe third. He just can’t finish.

Just rip off the band aid already. We shouldn’t fear the rebuild if our coach, GM, and ownership is what we think they are or should be.

I like Glass, but he isn’t worth two and a half million a season.

Attendance at 12 to 13,000. Sounds like the team effort is starting to be reflected in the fans efforts to get to the arena. Hope ownership notices.

I think I would call up Broz, if healthy, for Thursday.

I’m sure he would do well, miss 1 defensive assignment, then hardly see the ice ever again so elite superstars like Matt Nieto can continue to grace us all with their hockey greatness. Mike Sullivan Hawkey

Your right, the coach is a coupon clipper – if he isn’t buying in, then it doesn’t matter. Clip those coupons Sully, and save money on the vets, lol.

I have noticed a bit of Torts love in the comments before. Not you necessarily because I can’t keep track of comments. But he’s scratching and benching Michkov at times this season. Is that not how young players get held accountable and learn? Is that good coaching or coupon clipping?

I have zero confidence in Jarry, especially early and late in games, and I can’t imagine how the people in that lockerroom are feeling. He never stands on his head and steals a game. There have to be an enormous number of games now over last few years where he collapsed and let in tying goals late. He has to have one of the worst save percentages of any goalie in shootouts. Which begs the question, if the goalie is this bad on shootout attempts, maybe the penguins biggest problem is not the defensemen…or the lack of 2nd line right… Read more »

It not really the same. The penguins are 12th in shootout percentage. Meaning there are 11 worse teams in shootouts including Las Vegas, Tampa, and Islanders. Oh btw not sure if you watch the same games as I do but TJ kept this defensive deficient team in many games. He’s not Connor Hellebuyck,

Pens are 1-4 in shootouts (only sj is worse at 0-4), have given up most goals of any team, and Jarry has gaa of 3.43 and save % of .889. Six times in 18 games the first shot goes in, and how many late leads has jars surrendered? The trip to the minors was not an accident, and also did mot work

There was a lot more that we don’t know about the trip to the minors. Name a statistically significant better goaltender that is available right now!? You can’t!

This is why fans are angry or “pessimistic” about the Pens’ “turn around.” A good 10 game stretch does not undo 2 years of bad play. This game represents who the Pens are…their new DNA. This is not the 16-17 Pens though we try to see them that way.

Literally nobody sees them or tries to see them that way.

Its ok to be happy and have fun when they are winning. Its also ok to not whine and be apocalyptic when they lose some tight games.

Jarry is simply awful. Can they just put him on waivers? I agree with Sullivan in that I thought the late penalty on Lizotte was garbage. He got penalized for fore checking too strong? Any penalty called in A one goal game with less than 5 minutes needs to be a no doubt penalty not some ticky tack nonsense like they called. Then to make it worse they don’t call a blatant high stick on acciari in OT right in front of the refs. What an aggravating finish. And just pull the goalie during the OT they are never winning… Read more »

The team play wasn’t the reason they lost. They were playing fine and then.. What the hell was Jarry thinking with that clearing attempt? he had all day. Same for Gryzlck. Tack on the ridiculous penalty call at the end and there goes the game. Yes the PK could have bailed them out but they shouldn’t have been in that position in the first place. It started and ended with Jarry.

I aggee I thought they played strong in the 2nd and 3rd against a team thats been winning a lot lately

That penalty call was absolutely ridiculous. So was that dumb play Jarry made throwing it into Grelzycks back and waddling back to the net like an actual Penguin

To save time we should just spot the team the first goal when Jerky is starting… Then we can play catch up. He’s so arrogant… Never takes any responsibility for his lack of play… Totally opposite to Alex who puts it on himself even when it’s not warrented. Can never understand why coaches can’t see what’s in front of them… Sullivan and Tomlin both are stubborn and not willing to change, they have to be be right…. We paid him 5m so we’re going to play him. If we do get into the playoffs, can you imagine starting Jerky??

This team just doesn’t shoot enough…I really can’t understand the mentality…I get it, cycle the puck down low, and wear the other team out, but it makes no sense when you don’t even get a shot off…the 4th line had the puck a good amount down low, cycled, but then no one shoots at the net…then everyone gets trapped down low and teams break out 3 on 2…these defenseman(like Pickering) shooting the puck off the back wall so it bounces out front is a head- scratcher…put it on the net…we had Florida’s backup goalie the other night and PEPPERED him… Read more »

Just when you think it’s time to burn the boats, the team goes 7-2-1. And then they get back to 0-1-3 and it’s time to burn the boats. Here’s a stat for you that I think shows desire. CBus had 8 takeaways, Pens none?!! The officiating is normally bad, but it was exceptional tonight. No call on the high stick on Bunting in the crease or on the slash on Acciari but they call that on Lizette?! Makes no sense – when you are letting them play in the 3rd, you can’t call that penalty that didn’t even create a… Read more »

I think we saw this movie last year. KD will futz around until the td and make one trade. We will just miss the playoffs, but have low odds of winning the lottery. Several UFAs will leave over the summer and be replaced by rejects from other teams while the young guys get another year older in WBS. Rinse and repeat.

I hate shootouts anyway….stupid way to decide a game….and it certainly doesn’t make me like it anymore when my team is the worst at it. Our top goal scorers look lost when attempting a SO attempt. Maybe try someone else out there.

I’ve been critical of the Penguins over the past few seasons, and they continue to prove why. They’re simply not a good team. Even if they won 15 games in a row, I’d expect them to drop 20 of the next 25. I’m not buying into anything they’re selling until the roster is better constructed.I just look for the bright spots in the line-up – the top line and Pickering, outside of that, a dumpster fire.

I would rather struggle for a couple years with youthful talent than keep hearing about all the wonderful things this team does. They are old and slow – period.

And the whole idea of trading Pettersson. He isn’t the best defenseman, but it’s hard to play the role of two defensemen when Letang is constantly out of position and chasing players all over the ice. Watch closely and see where he is on the ice when goals are scored. How about trading Letang? Oh wait- you can’t break up the Holy Trinity ……

Funny thing, Geno was out of the lineup and the team did not seem to be the worse for it. He is past his prime and can no longer be a game breaker any more. I feel he was hurt when he was cross checked into the post with no call last game.

So, it’s Jar-Jar again. I don’t blame him for asking for a contract, I don’t blame him for asking for that much money and I don’t blame him for playng at the level of Sub-Saharan summer hockey league. I blame those that gave him that contract, made him sign it and continue to push for him to be in the net in the hopes of somehow recouping their investment. There was this talk of Carter and his protected, over 35 contract. Carter was never this bad. Jack Johnson, who played yesterday, was never this bad. In fact, I’m struggling to… Read more »
