Penguins Report Card: Team Quits, Someone ‘Do Something’

Pittsburgh Penguins game, Alex Nedeljkovic, Analysis

The Pittsburgh Penguins remained within striking distance for most of the game, but another deflection goal midway through the second period not only sapped the limited energy from the team but seemed to drain whatever heart they had left.

By early in the third period, the Penguins had signaled they had no intention or ability to be competitive. The Utah Hockey Club scored a couple more goals for a laugher. Utah won 6-1 at PPG Paints Arena.

The team has lost 16 of 23 games this season, and it has quit on itself more than a few times. Saturday was yet another hockey version of self-immolation. While the power play has often let them down, Saturday was a unique combination of their typically disorganized defensive zone coverage and a terrible penalty kill.

They were in the game. Sidney Crosby scored his 600th career goal. Players lept from the bench to celebrate greatness. The Penguins pulled to within 2-1 and had some life. But they undid it, just as they’ve more often done this season.

“I thought we had good energy. We had momentum, especially after Sid’s goal. You know, for me, what the penalty kill let us down significantly tonight. You know, again, I don’t know what it was, three, three powerplay goals. And one of which was shortly after Sid scores. You know, we get within striking distance, make it 2-1, we get some momentum, and then we don’t get it done on the penalty kill.”

There’s no question Sullivan’s job is in trouble. A team cannot repeatedly show an absolute lack of heart combined with disorganized play. Something has to give. But Sullivan is just one of many things that could change with this group. There are opportunities for addition by subtraction and roster holes, which, if filled, would go a long way to fortifying a competitive team.

Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic didn’t have a great night, but he was the one who spoke blunt truth to the team and situation. He challenged the team’s attitude and urged someone to do something about it.

It was the rant that had been missing in the sad and sullen Penguins’ room.

“It sucks. It sucks. I mean, I don’t know; the only other way I can say it is if we want to stop feeling like this after games, if we want to stop getting embarrassed at home, do something about it,” Nedeljkovic said. “I don’t know. Pay a price. Do something else. Feel something else. Like, anything else.”

Penguins Xs and Os?

The team is terrible defensively. It’s a roster problem, though the coach may well pay the price.

The structure and sort-out on the first two Utah goals looked more like a Kindergarten recess than a professional hockey team.

Ryan Graves and Matt Grzelcyk chased the puck on the first goal leaving Jack McBain wide open on the back post. Crosby lunged to break up the play, but his man was in the slot–if Crosby abandoned him as Grzelcyk did his man, it would have been a goal by a different player.

Defenseman Mikhail Sergachev was unguarded on the second goal (which was a 4v4 zone entry), which Nedeljkovic probably should have stopped.

Just so many terrible plays before the team packed it in. It is clear that the team does not believe in itself. It is further clear the Penguins have a significant lack of NHL talent on their blue line and dotting their forwards crew. There is a ton of weight being placed on Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, but not much help.

The hope of training camp, the intention of a GM to remain competitive out of respect for the future Hall of Famers in the locker room, and the promise of owner Tom Werner to Crosby that things would be better this year are gone, replaced by despair and growing hopelessness.

The team badly needs something to go its way, but such things are earned, not given. And this team hasn’t earned anything but the abysmal record and scorn it’s already receiving.

Penguins Report Card

Alex Nedeljkovic: C-

A couple of stoppable goals, but a few that weren’t. Goaltending didn’t help the Penguins Saturday, but it didn’t kill them, either.

Puljujarvi-O’Connor-Poulin: C

They had positive superficial analytics but were out-chanced and were scored upon without really having great offensive chances. It was a step back for the line, especially for winger Sam Poulin, who was late to his spots and not good with the puck.

Sidney Crosby: B

The Penguins great scored his 600th career goal. He tried. He cares. Crosby led all players with seven shots on goal.

Kris Letang: Hello?

Letang has not been a factor this season. He was on the ice for the last three Utah goals, including one even-strength tally. We won’t speculate, but he’s largely invisible, which has never been Letang–he’s not even making mistakes from trying too hard.

Ryan Graves-Matt Grzelcyk: Nope

Sullivan tried something. He’s short a right-handed defenseman and doesn’t seem to view Jack St. Ivany as a viable option right now. However, it absolutely didn’t work.

Graves continues to struggle. Grzelcyk continues to struggle. Their struggles did not cancel out.

Mike Sullivan:

The coach is pushing every button, pulling every lever. Like driving a racecar with three wheels and missing a cylinder, at some point, it’s just not possible. There probably isn’t a combination of players, a motivational speech, or a video session that can make a few players play with intensity or pride.

There are many passengers on the team and other players who have licked the stamp and are mailing it in. That usually means the head coach gets a phone call from the GM.

We don’t think Knute Rockney could inspire this group, but Sullivan is going to try.

“It’s not an easy experience to go through what we’re going through,” Sullivan said. “The biggest thing for me is to try to inspire these guys and make sure that we don’t give in to our emotions, that we’ve got to have some resilience to us.”

It’s hard to blame him, but it’s also probably going to land on him. That’s the business. Something has to give.

“Biggest thing is to inspire.” Nope. Try installing a defense, one that’s simpler and tougher than your philosophy defense. Also, the team misses the likes of Hornwvist, unlike Sullivan. One other step; put Karllson in the press box!

He had 3, takeaways, 2 blocks, and a hit….in addition to setting up Sid’s goal. He was the only one playing D last night.

Tank for a pick. Regroup next year. But keep with the plan. Stack draft picks, acquire prospects, etc…Keep hoarding your future assets and refusing to spend them to help the current team. Obviously that limits how you can build the roster but give it the old college try, try to get the core some more playoff hockey, but keep the future the prioirty. This year is obviously spent. Get as good of a pick as you can, scout like hell, then on to the future.

This makes sense on paper. Have you seen this team? You can add Gretzky in his prime next season to this roster and you are not making the playoffs. You are going to get the same results next season with how poor they are playing.

Something needs to be figured out this season. Plus right now with the poor play everyone’s value is tanking so bottom picks aren’t really going to help.

Ok Dan, here we go again. This was a great article but, please stop saying “The team is terrible defensively. It’s a roster problem, though the coach may well pay the price.” Yes, it is a roster problem, but my god man, please begin to acknowledge that Sullivan had a huge hand in creating this roster dumpster fire. He is the one who wants the small, skilled, offensive defenseman. Lots of good, solid, physical D-men went in free agency this summer but we got Grzelcyk. Yay. Why? Because he was supposed to fit in Sullivan’s system. He shares just as… Read more »

So St.Ivany played his way out of a spot? He has been MUCH better than Grzelcyk, and I would rather see him learn on the fly as he is much younger and more physical than 24, but why has he(24) not “played his way out of a spot”??? Sullivan does not have a use for any physical defensemen, witness Cole, Oleksiak and Gudbranson.

See 1983-84. They didn’t fire Lou Angotti. The problem isn’t Sully. It’s a lack of talent, speed, and hockey smarts on the roster. Keep piling up the losses. It’s the best thing that could happen.

Sully is one of the biggest problems. Almost all other coaches get more from the same talent than this clown. His system stinks. My grandmother could coach better. But I believe it is hilarious how people think he is a good coach despite all the evidence to the contrary.

why do people assume that Sullivan hasn’t tried to change things….he literally has…I’ve watched 3 games with slightly different approaches being used and trying to be implemented. Do you not see that? The players are literally not executing on assignments, its pretty obvious to see….Sullivan HAS CHANGED SYSTEMIC APPROACHES, at least 3 different times….looking at this roster I expected them to be no better than bottom 10. There are no first line wingers and a bunch of 3rd, 4th liners and other teams healthy scratches….Point the blame at Sullivan all you want and he deserves some….but I would say you… Read more »

Systems in the NHL are severely over rated. This is a reas and react league and most players have no idea what to do out there even after being told multiple times. You really think the coaching staff is telling those guys to chase behind thy net and not worry about the front?
There’s zero reason to fire the coach.
Even if we believe the players are sick of him. The Penguin FO hasn’t had a cogent successful plan in years now. That’s where we need to start. The team is so bad now any coach would be wildly unsuccessful.

Over the RH/KD years, I’ve watched this roster get worse, until it got to where it is now. Go back, look at Sullivan’s face when Jack was traded. He just knew it was all over. Yeah, Jake didn’t want to sign here, but did anyone ask themselves why? You think it was the money? Bunting and Hayes, and there’s your money. And Crosby? How’s he doing? Not the spectacular year as the last one. I really don’t understand why? Can’t he play all by himself at 37? And you know what’s the worse part? We could’ve paid Dumo his $3… Read more »

I know everyone is talking about Sullivan, but what’s happening with Dan Quinn? He was brought in to run the D and PP.

At this point I would be surprised if they fire him. They might have done it a while ago, but with the 4 Nation tournament coming up and him as as the coach I am not so sure. Management and the owners probably won’t do it. I am not saying that is that is the right call, but it seems like they will keep him at least until then.

Hard to blame Sullivan??? Are you kidding me??? Sullivan plays the same B.S. system that no longer works in this new fast-paced NHL!!! The guy has no clue how to implement new or fresh ideas. He is a waste of space that needed to be fired a long time ago. He was a great coach for us for many years, but that is in the past, and the past no longer exists. Wow Dan, you are in overload response mode. Here’s my take on part of the problem, Gryzlick was the WORST signing Dubas made last year, really don’t mind the forward signings. This is what I perceive as a bad hire. Quinn as Assistant Coach responsible for the Defense and PP. PP has shown some signs of life since the departing of Reirden, but now we wonder why Quinn was fired from previous jobs? He can’t handle an assistant role. I thought no defense was worse than the one employed by Reirden, well we’ve found one. This guy needed to go… Read more »

The NHL is only fast paced now because of an influx of highly skilled young talent. The Pens lack this kind of ability any where on the roster. Sully can not just implement a new system, when he lacks the players required for a more complex system. They can fire Sullivan and they will probably just get worse. You are delusional if you think there is a completive team here with another coaching staff.

It’s time to get our prospects 50-60 games of experience this season to prepare them for next year. That means letting them play through their mistakes without punitive measures. With the Thanksgiving benchmark approaching, it’s time for Dubas to step up. Sticking with the same lineup isn’t just ineffective; it’s damaging to the morale and mental health of players who are committed. Ignoring this could lead to attendance dipping below 13,000 soon.

This is both Dubas and Sullivan who created the problem. Dubas brought rental players to compete for spots that would have been given to younger players and karlsson is destroying the defense for what he gets paid (Dubas signing). Sullivan doesn’t give younger players an opportunity not enven a chance to play with Sid to learn. God forbid he puts a high prospect on the 1st line. He buries them on the 4th line to play 5-6mins a game and expects them to score and then they get sent down. His system doesn’t work for this team of players so… Read more »

Hi Dan, This is the Result of 10 years of Emotion being coached out of this team. Sullivan was brought in to bring a calming hand to help get over the teams like Philly who thrived on creating an emotional battle with the Pens because there’s no way that team could beat a Penguins team that was focused, and it worked for 2 years and won 2 cups. 10 years later and players were traded because Sully couldn’t get them to control their emotions, Kessel, Neal, Hornquist, Cole. Look at Karlsson, emotions being under control and media banging on about… Read more »

I think the blame can go around with Sullivan, Dubas and others, but who cares! They all need to have a meeting between the coaches and upper management to figure out a plan on how to pull this ship from the bottom of the sea. I think addition by subtraction needs to happen. They have to get rid of Karlsson unfortunately he just hasn’t fit this team at all. Grzelcyk should be sent to WBS or at least benched. I think Dan’s previous article of young talent available I think some deals need to be made. I would try for… Read more »

Been folowing Pens since here very first year. Even when bad and tanking they still played hard and with a measure of pride.

Never thought I’d say this about a Pens team: “they played like a bunch of gutless, heartless, bums.” If Rio was still running the show, this wouldn’t be allowed to happen.

This isn’t on Sully or KB. This is entirely on gutless, pay check cashers, with no heart or pride. This is on you PLAYERS. Nobody can make ou reach deep and have pride. All on you!

I know this won’t happen but the best thing that could happen to this organization is to gut it, that would speed up this rebuild a little. Get what you can from the big 3, I’m sure if they were sat down they would understand and lift their ntc. This team keeps trying to live in the past and it’s done. A competitive team will never be put around Crosby, no prospects, horrible cap situation, they need to just blow it up , or it will be that much longer before they become competitive again

When only one player quits, it is probably that player. When two players quit, it still may be the players, when people say the whole team quits, it is the Coach and it isn’t a matter of quitting, it is a matter of morale. Also, when the Xs and Os are a problem is once again on the Coach. A Coach has got to coach the team he has and not the team he wishes he had. The Coach needs to create game plans that put the players he has in a position to succeed not fail. Instead, these square… Read more »

Reality Check, It isn’t that the big three are quitting on the team or are bad. How can any skater, Forward or Defender have any level of compete or morale when they can’t trust their Goalie to stop shots?

Blomqvist is still the only Goalie on this team to beat a +500 opponent and he owns 3 of the 4 regulation Wins this incarnation of the Penguins has managed. (That is right only 4 regulation Wins).

Don’t get me wrong, I would not want Blomqvist, or any of the other promising rookies in the system to be infected by this teams pathos.
