The Pittsburgh Penguins begin their waiting game Monday with on and off-ice workouts at the UPMC Lemieux Complex. The waiting is the hardest part. The Penguins won the division on Saturday night but still don’t know if their opponent will be the Boston Bruins or New York Islanders. The NHL trade rumors are kicking up again and include more Jack Eichel to the New York Rangers speculation. And Rick Tocchet and the Arizona Coyotes are done with each other.

There’s not much Penguins news until later today when we’ll see who skates and learn more injury progress for Mike Matheson and Evan Rodrigues. PHN will have full coverage.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: It’s the 2020-21 PHN Readers Poll and Pittsburgh Penguins awards. Vote on the best performance, biggest hit, and best goal of the season. We had some issues with the polls yesterday, so make sure you vote!

PHN+: The weekly Off the Record was emotionally charged. We had to edit several quotes to avoid outing sources whose anger over the New York Rangers’ firings was loud and clear. You’ll get the gist and why.

NYI Hockey Now: The Penguins most likely playoff opponent–the New York Islanders–FINALLY got some life out of Kyle Palmieri, and they’re trying to stoke that fire.

The Islanders don’t stand a chance with the scoring they’ve been getting but will be a very tough out if they find some cohesion with Palmieri.

NHL News & National Hockey Now

Sportsnet: Rick Tocchet lasted four years behind the Arizona Coyotes bench. Sunday, they mutually agreed to part ways.

From this vantage point, Tocchet did a lot with a little. Arizona was in the playoff hunt despite a lack of top-line talent and a lack of A-players at any position. Former teammate Ron Francis is hiring, don’t ya know?

Also–stick taps to Jimmy Murphy of the Hockey Now network. His reporting of several situations in the weekly “Off the Record” column, including Tocchet teetering in AZ, were weeks ahead of everyone else.

TSN: The Calgary Flames are Connor McDavid fans. Edmonton must beat Montreal twice, and Calgary must win their final four games to make the playoffs.

ESPN+: Greg Wyhsinki opines: Patience is no longer a virtue with the New York Rangers. And “there’s never been a top center James Dolan didn’t want.” Cue the Eichel to Rangers NHL trade chatter.

The “+” means it’s a paywall story.

San Jose: NHL trade speculation is swirling around Timo Meier. Sheng Peng cautions, now is NOT the time to deal the talented forward.

Boston: More and more, it seems Jeremy Swayman will be around for a long time. Now he’s taking on-ice selfies during warmups with fans that have Boston fawning.

Florida: You remember Alex Wennberg, his rise and fall in Columbus. He’s finding a second life in Florida.
