Penguins Scrimmage 3 In The Books; McCann Nets Winner

The Pittsburgh Penguins got back to training camp work Friday after a day off Thursday and held their third scrimmage.

The scrimmage began with lively special teams drills. Then came a short shootout competition.

During the ensuing five-on-five portion, play at times didn’t seem as crisp as might have been expected.

The top two goalies looked sharp in the first half. Casey DeSmith stopped Evgeni Malkin in tight and covered the puck behind him in the crease before Malkin could reach behind to poke it in. At the other end, Tristan Jarry stopped a backhander shoveled his way by Sidney Crosby.

Drew O’Connor, making the most of his camp time, got the only goal of the first half.

In the second half, Evan Rodrigues ripped a shot from the slot past goaltender Alex D’Orio. Ever the vigilant — or clownish — teammates started shouting “Offsides,” but to no avail.

Jared McCann made a nice move dancing with the puck and beat D’Orio in the final seconds to give Team Black a 2-1 win.
