Dan’s Daily: Robertson Off the Table?; Crosby’s Penguins Acceptance
Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby expressed his acceptance of the difference between his job and president of hockey operations/GM Kyle Dubas’s tough and team-altering decisions to come. The NHL trade rumors may have lost a big name Tuesday when the Maple Leafs buckled Nick Robertson, getting him to sign a one-year deal on the cheap. Or maybe he’s still available? Regarding the Vegas Golden Knights, former VGK winger Jonathan Marchessault took a pretty good shot at the management team with neither malice nor sadness. And Sportsnet laid out the Metro Division players who need to deliver.
I’d like to give a little pub to a great little place on the Southside–One of the places that adults can go for a beer and wings is Archies, just across the Birmingham bridge. The Paul Zeise grilled cheese is good. I met another media person (the aforementioned Zeise), and before long, it was a radio-guy meet-up talking sports.
I’m told that’s a frequent occurrence–so if you have a little craving for wings (and sports), pop over. Archie is a good guy.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Sidney Crosby offered some important insights on what’s next for the Penguins. More importantly, he acknowledged that Dubas will be making some hard decisions, and that’s his job, just as it’s Crosby’s job to play. Here’s a good starting point for what’s next for the Penguins season.
Steelers Now: There are a couple of Super Steelers not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. If the stories are true, at least one writer made a point of opposing several worthy candidates because there were too many Steelers in the Hall. Maybe now is the time—LC Greenwood leads six Steelers for senior nominations to the Hall of Fame.
Greenwood not in the Hall is an unresolved crime.
Pittsburgh Baseball Now: It’s been a slog for Andrew McCutchen. The Pirates’ heartbeat needed a breakout, and he finally got it. Here’s what’s been missing for McCutchen.
NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
Sportsnet: Nick Robertson is off the table, at least for a moment. He signed a meager one-year deal for under a million bucks with the Toronto Maple Leafs, who got a sweet bargain. But some believe Robertson is still available. What it means for Robertson and Toronto.
Vegas Hockey Now: It was a pretty good barb without remorse or anger. Speaking on the Cam and Strick podcast, Original Misfit Jonathan Marchessault, who signed with the Nashville Predators as a free agent, said it’s fine, but the Vegas Golden Knights have no loyalty.
New Jersey Hockey Now: I think New Jersey is the most improved team in the Metropolitan Division. Jacob Markstrom is going to make a world of difference. James Nichols knows the team better than anyone, and he has the top five burning questions for the New Jersey Devils.
NYI Hockey Now: The Islanders had a quiet offseason. Anthony Duclair was the big addition. So, are they stuck in the middle? Russel Macias has the two burning questions ahead of the New York Islanders training camp.
TSN: After a good bit of speculation that the Edmonton Oilers were interested, it was the Calgary Flames who surprisingly nabbed Tyson Barrie on a PTO.
Brock Boeser overcame his blood clot issue to be ready for this season but he’s also a pending unrestricted free agent. Without a new deal, his name will naturally start to appear in some of the NHL trade rumors, but Boesar is putting the onus on himself to earn a new contract.
