So did No. 1 goalie Tristan Jarry, who hasn’t played since breaking a bone in his foot on April 14.

New York rallied for wins in Games 5 and 6. The Penguins led in each game, 2-0, but squandered both leads. Crosby was knocked out of Game 5 late in the second period by a chicken wing hit by New York defenseman Jacob Trouba. The NHL declined to penalize Trouba.

New York defenseman Ryan Lindgren caught Rakell with a head hit early in Game 1.

Crosby had nine points (2-7-9) in the first four games of the series, and the Penguins’ top line dominated New York. Winger Jake Guentzel has seven goals in the series.

Jarry struggled in the 2021 NHL playoffs, posting an .888 save percentage in six games against the New York Islanders. The Penguins lost the series in six games. Jarry allowed only one goal in Game 4 of the 2020 Qualifying Round game against the Montreal Canadiens. However, the Penguins lost 2-0.

Rakell had 13 points (4-9-13) in 19 regular-season games with the Penguins.

The puck drops just after 7 p.m. at Madison Square Garden. The winner advances to Round Two.
