Penguins Add MORE Speed; Sign Colin White to PTO

The Pittsburgh Penguins added another forward to an already crowded training camp locker room Saturday. The team announced they signed speedy forward Colin White to a PTO.

White, 26, played with the Florida Panthers last season after six years with the Ottawa Senators. While his offensive output has usually been low, he has had a few seasons with significant production. In 2018-29, White had 41 points with 14 goals in 71 games. He also had 18 points with 10 goals in only 45 games in 2020-21.

The right-handed White can play center or wing, but he’s known for the one commodity the Penguins have been stockpiling this summer: speed.

White is an exceptional skater with adequate size. He’s 6-foot-1, 194 pounds, and a couple of years ago, he might have been seen as quite a get as a PTO. However, he had only 15 points in 68 games last season with Florida and only two assists in 21 playoff games.

White will join a crowded forwards crew that already includes no less than six players fighting for a spot on the NHL roster. Andreas Johnsson, Vinnie Hinostroza, Joona Koppanen, Rem Pitlick, and Austin Wagner are already expected to be in training camp. Wagner is also on a PTO.

There figures to be no more than three spots available.

Penguins prospects Sam Poulin and Valtteri Puustinen are also NHL roster hopefuls.

A competitive camp is a very good thing. I think it means that there will be few opportunities for players from WB/S to make the club this year which may not be an all bad thing. Another year of development is a great thing – especially if they are not all the way ready. It is also going to push some vets to play above and beyond…. hopefully no camp without a little bit of physicality and competitive juices. With aging roster, they need to have a deep club at WB/S, which means there may well be opportunity for players… Read more »

Speed, acceptable size, and experience on a PTO. This continues to build up for what will be the most exciting and competitive training camp in quite a while. Not all the roster spots are determined for a change.

We all want to see Pickering and Yager show signs of being the future cornerstones of the franchise this training camp, but the guys I am most curious about are O’Connor and Poulin. Dubas has upgraded the bottom six already AND given Sullivan a cupboard full of guys that fit his preferred mold for bottom six players. Last season the bar was so low O’Connor was able to clear it. Can he this year? Pressure’s on. Poulin is in a better place and I am genuinely happy for him. There’s more to life than hockey. But he is a professional… Read more »

I wouldn’t expect too much from Poulin. He missed almost the entire 22-23 season for mental health reasons, and as a result his development is a year behind. With the lack of high end prospects, I fully expect management to be even more cautious and look to build his confidence by not giving him overwhelming expectations. WBS is going to be miles ahead of where they were the last 2 seasons. Giving the kid a spot at camp this year is really just a nod from management to say “we still believe in you”. After that, shipping him back to… Read more »

Wish they had an over supply of defensive players competing, but they are the Pens as always! Offense comes first! Should be entertaining to watch for 82 games!

I like it, Dubas is a man of his word. He’s added depth and competition. Camp should be very interesting this year.
