PHN Q&A! Over the Cap, 9 D-Men, and UFAs — Submit Your Questions

Pittsburgh Penguins

The summer seems to have flown past. The rainy and miserable April and May were followed by nonstop hockey work in June and July. Pittsburgh Hockey Now has siblings, SteelersNow.com and PittsburghBaseballNow.com. The Pittsburgh Penguins splashed the cash on their star players in exchange for extra years on contracts, GM Ron Hextall went big on the NHL trade market, and we do not think he’s done.

PHN reported that Brian Boyle isn’t done playing and perhaps expects/hopes to be back with the Penguins. Josh Archibald was signed, Johan Larsson was not. The Penguins are over the salary cap with nine NHL defensemen, yet their bottom-six forwards crew doesn’t feel settled.

So, fire away in for the weekly PHN Q&A segment to appear on Thursday.

Put your question in the comments, tweet them to me @thedankingerski, or email contact@nationalhockeynow.com.

Also, if we don’t do it on Twitter beforehand, we’ll do it in the mailbag — more exciting news coming! You’ll be seeing a lot of the Sports Now folks, and that’s all I got to say about that … for now.

Hey Dan,
I feel like this team severely lacks Centre depth and with the top-3 centres over 35 and Sid and/or Geno seemingly always hurt, do you feel GMRH needs to address the centre position by bringing in a forward or two who can play both Centre and wing, like Erod and Boyle did last year?

yes but he is kind of a big unknown – like high reward low risk – do not know what you going to get

You’re paying the guy $750k and he’s taking up a roster spot…that’s not low risk…

Actually it is low risk, 750,000 is the league minimum. High risk is paying 3.2 mil for someone who produced only 11 goals.

Ive been happy with Hextall’s moves this summer.

However, when looking at a third line of Kapanen Carter Mcginn…thats a whole lot of cap space without a whole lot of production.

What’s Hextall’s rationale there?

Probably found in the same chapter that says relying on Zucker for Line 2 is a bright idea.

Dan..Puljujarvi from Edmonton just signed for 3 mil, if there was a deal to swap Dumoulin or Pettersson, who would you trade?

Pettersson. Dumo’s contract is up after this season while Pettersson’s boat anchor contract pays him over $4 million for the next 3 seasons.

Hi Dan, In a trade situation, is it possible to retain salary on just one year of a multiyear deal or does it fall into the literal meaning of ” Average Annual Value” throughout the current contract years? I was just curious because that could be a game changer.

Dan,

Where do the Penguins rank among all the NHL teams in average age? Do you think that there is too much being made about the Penguins being too old to compete for the cup? Especially when the “old” guys are still among the teams top players.

Who is your early pick for surprise member of the opening night roster? Maybe a young guy we aren’t expecting to make the team but has a spectacular camp. Similar to how Drew O’Connor did last season.

Dan,
Do you feel confident in the penguins bringing in so many defensemen, who have no chemistry playing together. And what do you think the defense pairings will look like, seeing as how at least one will get traded. It looks really difficult to decide, as all nine of them are perfectly capable to have some role in the lineup.

Really good question! What I would like to see is Joseph and Smith win in training camp. I would make these the pairings:

Joseph-Letang
Dumoulin-Petry
Smith-Rutta
Friedman

The hard part will be getting someone to take Petterson’s contract. going to have to throw in a prospect or draft pick. Ruhwedel is a solid RHD someone would take him and his 2 years of inexpensive contract. Friedman adds edge and spark that no one else does, so he makes the team. This is the best way to get under the cap, in my opinion.

Has anyone spoken with Sully about him coaching the team with older players and tweaking the style of play? They aren’t speedy anymore.

Melissa, your going to upset the Yinzers! Just sit back and watch this train wreck. They’re the same team that can’t win a playoff series in last 4 yrs. Have gotten older. Had tremendous opportunity to start to get younger. Crosby wanted team to stay together and he runs show. Melissa, just set back and watch! Their division is not concerned, I promise.

I thought yinzers were the people who wanted Hextall to let two of their best players go for nothing without any replacements. Now i am confused. 🤔 someone consult urban dictionary for me.

Would you trade Kap for Jesse? Cap hit almost the same,Kap 2years and Jesse 1 year.Kap faster but Jesse bigger? Your comments. Thanks.

If no trades,we are 480,000.over the cap with 13 forwards,8ds and two goalies. Again if nothing changes,we will have to run with 13forwards,7ds and 2 goalies and be less 300,000.under the cap.Short term injuries will be interesting.

Hey Dan, In trying to wrap my head around Kapanen’s contract I could only come up with three explanations: 1. They thought he could get over 3.2 mill in arbitration and put them in a terrible spot cap-wise. 2. They added him for two years because they think they can trade him and the second year adds more value to a trade. 3. They think he is due for a major rebound year and he is a bargain at 3.2 mill, especially in year 2 after scoring 30+ goals this year. What is your read on why they offered him… Read more »

So the rumour of another trade Hex should be proactive and bring player for the rebuild which will be sooner than we think, Although JT Miller would be a decent catch to help transition to the Crosby less years what other players would be good choices to help in those years

My burning question is, why did Mr. Excitement up and quit on DK Sports on the eve of the playoffs? Give us the sordid details, please.

I think it’s too early to speculate opening-day roster. Could it be that management is collecting assets in hopes of that next trade?
Are Poulin and Legare still in future plans or are they not progressing as expected?

Dan, I need you to guess at how you think Hextall will get the Penguins under the salary cap and when he will do it? Theoretically he can wait until after training camp and see who wins the job. If that is the case, Ty Smith could throw a wrench in everyone’s plan to send him down to clear out cap space with a strong training camp. I have a feeling that he is #2 on the LHD depth chart after training camp. That is my wild prediction but its based more on lack of faith in Petterson and Joseph… Read more »

Hi Dan, is it more reasonable to see the bottom 6 or Line 2 as a question mark right now? On the one hand, the mix of the bottom 6 needs work and it’s led by several guys who were round one busts. On the other hand, I’m not sure Line 2 isn’t a bigger question mark because that line has to be a difference maker for the Pens to be more than one and done. While I think Malkin’s contract is a killer in year 4, I suspect with a full summer to train, he’ll have a bit of… Read more »

Hi Dan,
I read the article about the left side of the Penguins defense. If Dumo plays the way he did last year, what options via trade do we have? I’d love to read an article identifying potential replacements, based on the Hockey Now sources. Or, would Sullivan switch Ruuta to the left? We can likely get away with Petersson and Ty/POJ as our second and third pair options. If we get last years version of Dumo, all the work on the defense could be for not.

Thanks,
John

He did have minor knee surgery after the season, but do we know how long he played injured or restricted for? Was it the cause of his very unusual turnovers and generally un dumo like play?
