Dan’s Daily: Penguins UFA Watch, John Gibson Asks for Trade (Again)

NHL trade, pittsburgh penguins, john gibson

The Pittsburgh Penguins offseason can finally begin this week as president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas settles in for his first week on the job. Dubas and coach Mike Sullivan seem to be in agreement with the type of players to add for next season, so we begin the process of looking at free agents for the Penguins. Toronto wants Auston Matthews to sign a new deal before July 1, or the NHL trade rumors could get hot. Mike Babcock is headed back to the NHL, and John Gibson could or should be on the trade block again.

Game 2 of the Cup Final is set to begin. I’ve been telling you — go heavy on Vegas. I’d be shocked if they lose this Cup. Here’s a $200 promo DraftKings bet for new players.

Pittsburgh Penguins / Steelers, Pirates:

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Speed. Sullivan and, presumably, Dubas want more. A preliminary look at speedy NHL free agents on the cheap.

PHN+: Mike Sullivan chatted with the media Friday. He had answers, but here’s what his media chat really said. Penguins analysis.

Steelers Now:

How soon should the Steelers start Broderick Jones?

Three sleepers from the Steelers OTAs.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now:

The Pirates are rolling. Rich Hill was masterful. The Pirates win (again).

Henry Davis is headed to Triple-A. More Pirates prospects news.

NHL Trade Talk, Stanley Cup Final, & National Hockey Now:

Orange County Register: A stick tap to Spector’s Hockey for finding this one. Lisa Dillman reports that John Gibson met with Anaheim officials and again asked for a trade.

Sportsnet: Auston Matthews’s no-trade clause kicks in on July 1, and new GM Brad Treliving will try to get his name on a contract before then. Would they deal him if they can’t? 32 Thoughts.

Deadspin: I don’t usually link to Deadspin. They do what they do, and if that’s your taste, more power to you. They had some thoughts as the Columbus Blue Jackets are hiring Mike Babcock.

Vegas Hockey Now: The Golden Knights stuck it to Keith Tkachuk. As Nic Hague laughed, the VGK pulled away in Game 1. Also, Vegas goalie coach Sean Burke did made a presentation for his team on how to beat Sergei Bobrovsky. The Vegas Golden Knights look really good.

The Golden Knights are trying to learn from past mistakes. They’ve been humbled by the past, but it doesn’t sound like they are too impressed with a Game 1 win. You can feel the determination surrounding the Vegas Golden Knights.

Florida Hockey Now: It was a tough start for Matthew Tkachuk and the Florida Panthers.

New Jersey Hockey Now: Our new reporter James Nichols opened the mailbag. From the NHL trade market to offseason changes for the upstart New Jersey Devils.
