Penguins Angry; Why Friday’s Loss Raises Big Issues

The Pittsburgh Penguins showed a little more emotion after the game Friday than during it. The team slumbered through a 4-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes at PPG Paints Arena.

Later scoring chances gave the Penguins 11 shots through two periods, but they were originally scored with only nine. They ended with 27 shots after a late push that resulted in more shots but few scoring chances.

After the game, Penguins center Lars Eller ripped into his team’s effort.

From PPG Paints Arena, Dan Kingerski skipped past the game details–there wasn’t much to break down–but dove into the big issues already threatening the Penguins season, which Eller and Kris Letang articulated. But also a couple of other issues that could unwind the Penguins’ hopes.

The Penguins have been completely outskated and outplayed by the Rangers and Carolina — both of whom are serious contenders. Last night’s 4-1 loss was not that close. There is nothing in the first 6 games to suggest that the Penguins are better than last year, and plenty to suggest they are worse. IMO, the Jake trade and the Jarry signing were two moves that made a reversal of fortunes improbable. The Crosby/Malkin era is over. It was great while it lasted.

There’ll be games like this…there’ll be games like this (especially against CAR, who gives the Pens the willies). I think Jarry is just happy he was not on the ice for that one, but Blomqvist did give the Pens a chance, even if the high shots seem to be his weakness. I saw the defensive gaffes, and they’ll need tightened up a bit, but it will never be solid shut-down defense first, this is not the Pittsburgh Steelers 70’s Steel Curtain. This is the Pittsburgh Penguins, a franchise built on this motto OFFENSE, OFFENSE, ELITE GOALTENDING, LUCK AND TIMING. Whoever… Read more »

This team is too old and slow. So far every time they play a top team they can’t compete. It’ll be really hard to make a playoff this year.

I quit watching to turn to a baseball game that I could hardly care less about. I wanted to refamiliarize myself to what a team looks like when it cared.

Carolina was awesome. Well coached. Disciplined. Always supporting each other. Always in the right spots defensively. An effective PP. A smothering PK.
But coaching makes no difference right. Lets just keep the same silly sloppy Sully system.
Keep Sully, keep losing!

I’m tired of hearing, “we need to play with more emotion, more discipline, more execution!” We heard this all last year. JUST DO IT! You’re pros! If you can’t put on a Penguins and get excited to play….leave! Bring up the youngsters!
