Coach’s Debrief: Breaking Down the Penguins Defensive Issues; Preparing for Buffalo

In each of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ first three games, defensive zone coverage has been an issue, at least for extended periods of play. We’ll scrap the opening night smackdown by the New York Rangers as the Penguins had more problems than 1970s Harley. In the next three games, all on the road, the Penguins displayed both very good and very bad defensive zone coverage.

Our resident expert, Coach Francis Anzalone, who has coached in the USHL and NAHL internationally and has been a guest coach for NHL teams, really spotted some interesting things in the film room, including some exasperating puck-watching. He also saw some things to like.

But before Francis takes us into the film room, he explains the principles for which to be watching.

“Good players look. Great players look and see,”–Bobby Knight.

This is another great effort from Francis to drop a little knowledge on fans who want to know what’s going on. Also, Francis made his own graphics for the video because the coach doesn’t half-ass anything. Give it a go, we think you’ll be a little better for it.

The video:

00:00-1:20: Introduction
1:21-3:51: Bottom Line Up Front
3:52-9:19: The Big 3
9:20-20:43: Film Room
20:43: Next Game Preparation… Readying for Buffalo and Carolina
