Dan’s Daily: Stamkos Heartbroken; Prospect Trade Talk; Penguins Viewed Poorly

NEW YORK — The non-existent storms kept my plane on the ground and the trade chatter to the realm of the prospects. Sportsnet lined up suitors for the unhappy and blocked prospects currently on the NHL trade market, a Flyers prospect slept through the alarm and blew off a flight to Philadelphia, Steven Stamkos admitted that he’s heartbroken over leaving Tampa Bay, Torey Krug may miss the entire season, and we delivered our State of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

I’d love to show you photos of some great food or fun in New York on my Spirit Airlines-forced extra day in NYC, but it is so ridiculously muggy, so sidewalk meltingly hot that sweat forms before you walk a block, and I’ve largely hidden in the hotel. I’m here for meetings with our new web people. I don’t think you’ll notice a lot of differences, but you’ll soon have easier access to Hockey Now network content, podcasts, and hopefully more network sites. We’ll also be looking for more podcasters and people to have some fun with videos. If that’s you, hit me up. It’s all about giving our readers more.

I did indulge for a minute. After the 90-minute trek back from the airport (they announced my cancellation just as I walked through security), I got a tiny margarita on Madison Ave. that was … $13, even for Happy Hour. But it was cold, and it helped with the absolute temper tantrum I was throwing internally.

Thank you for sticking around and supporting us thus far. I haven’t been this excited about our company in a long time. Getting this Spruce Goose off the water may happen yet.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: I enlisted colleagues and professionals to help. How does the rest of the league view the Penguins and their offseason? It might be a bit eye-opening. From the changes to the core, here’s the State of the Penguins.

Some good news for Brayden Yager. The Penguins’ 2023 first-rounder was invited to the Team Canada World Juniors showcase camp to begin competing for a spot on the national team. Here’s the latest for the top Penguins prospect.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now: Ace. Fireballing stud. Splinker tossing phenom. Here’s the All-Star debut of the great Paul Skenes.

Steelers Now: It’s training camp time, but before we do the Latrobe thing, here are the 2024 theme games on the Steelers schedule.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

Sportsnet: Rutger McGroarty and Yaroslav Askarov are a couple of the hottest prospects in hockey, and they are also on the NHL trade block. Which teams are interested, and who has the assets to get a deal done?

Players’ Tribune: “I never thought I’d have to do one of these,” wrote Steven Stamkos, who signed a hefty four-year deal with the Nashville Predators, leaving the Tampa Bay Lightning, the only hockey home he’d known. Stamkos admits the process and leaving is–not was–is heartbreaking.

Yardbarker: Never buy into the Russian rumors until they happen. I think some young writers just got their first lesson on that one–a report from Russia indicated Evgeny Kuznetsov was leaving Carolina for the KHL. Not true, said his agent, who tried to shoot down those rumors.

Sportsnet: The LA Kings took one RFA out of circulation, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal for their former second-overall pick and emerging star, Quinton Byfield.

Philly Hockey Now: Rumors abound the Flyers’ top goalie prospect either slept through his flight from Belarus or blew it off. The plot thickens with the goalie prospect who may or may not be coming to the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Flyers have had some stories with prospects in the last 12 months: one refused to talk to them, one bailed on a contract before coming back six months later, and now one blew off a flight for Development Camp. What is going on?!

New Jersey Hockey Now: The State of the Devils. From new lineup projections to defensive injections and renewed hope in Newark. This offseason, it is all coming up New Jersey Devils.

TSN: Whoops. A bold report indicated there was a deal between the Red Wings and Rangers for Jacob Trouba, but subsequent reports put that into context as only talks. Now it appears Trouba is off the trade block, at least until next summer.

FHN+: What do you think–repeat? After sacrificing a few players to the salary cap gods, here’s how the new-look Florida Panthers stack up.

NHL.com: It’s a shame–he’s a good defenseman. Torey Krug has been diagnosed with pre-arthritic changes in his left ankle. He could miss the entire season.

Does that mean Vegas will trade for him and bring him back for Game 1 of the playoffs?
