Vincent Desharnais, We Hardly Knew Ye; Penguins Get Draft Pick

Pittsburgh Penguins, defenseman Vincent Desharnais

Defenseman Vincent Desharnais’ time with the Pittsburgh Penguins was brief. The team on Wednesday traded him to the San Jose Sharks for a 2028 fifth-round draft pick.

The deal gives the Penguins eight picks in 2028.

Desharnais was acquired Feb. 1 from Vancouver as part of a deal that sent defenseman Marcus Pettersson and forward Drew O’Connor to the Canucks. The Penguins also got a conditional first-round draft pick, winger Danton Heinen and prospect Melvin Fernstrom from Vancouver.

At 6 feet 7, 226 pounds, Desharnais was being counted on to provide some snarl. It’s questionable whether he was able to meet the Penguins’ expectations there. In 10 games with the Penguins, he had no points, four penalty minutes and was a minus-4.

While this trade was not a big splash, the Penguins are generally considered to be expected to make more moves before Friday’s 3 p.m. NHL trade deadline.

It frees up a roster spot for the penguins. I’d rather have St. Ivany on the roster than Desharnais.

Nothing burger. Who cares about a fifth three years from now.

A 5th round pick in 4 years is more about getting rid of a player than it is about gaining a pick.

Agree, would rather give him up and play Shea on the right or St. Irving.

Makes room for Luke Schenn. Finally…a heavyweight who drops the gloves and polices the front of the net.

If they are smart, they trade him also. He is 35 and although he will fit right in age wise with our other guys he doesn’t fit the team in where they are supposed to be going.

No! Keep Schenn at 2.75, trade karssson with 2m retained, get better defense and save 5.25 million

Last week’s initial mock 2028 draft looked promising.

At least you find humor in it. Ship him out so there’s a spot on the roster for PUJ. Total F’ing joke.

Good move. He was the slightest hair better than Graves. Useless!

No loss on this deal. Desjharnais looked surprising soft and didn’t seem to fit with the Pens. Schenn is awesome but if he isn’t flipped before Friday I’ll be surprised

8 goals in the last 16 games for Novak, he’s playing well right now. He had 43 points in 51 games as a 25 year old in 2022-2023 averaging just 14:39 a game. Interested to see where he slots in the lineup. Could be an elite 3 C or bubble top 6 center, could be a long term fixture, could be flipped again. Very interesting to see how this shakes out

I get trading Dejcharnais for nothing. I get it. Get rid of him. But a 2028 draft pick?? Just dumb. And if he was so awful that you traded him for basically nothing, why’d get him in the first place. Dubas is paid a lot of money to not make bad trades and signings. He’s rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic. Anyone that thinks he has a master Master Plan is deluding themselves. Guys lost
