Perhaps it is fitting the Pittsburgh Steelers visit the Cleveland Browns at 1 p.m. Sunday at First Energy Stadium in a Halloween matchup

The last time the teams played, it was the Steelers who had a trick played on them and the Browns who got the treat of their first playoff victory since 1994. The Browns built a quick 28-0 led and went on to win 48-37 in an AFC wild-card round game at Heinz Field.

Moving ahead to this season, the Steelers (3-3) won back-to-back games before having their bye last week.

The Browns are coming off a 17-14 victory over the Denver Broncos. Third-string running back D’Ernest Johnson rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries with Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt sidelined by calf injuries.

Steelers – Browns Betting Preview

The Steelers have gone 36-9-1 against the Browns since 1999. The tide, though, seems to be turning as Cleveland won twice last season in three meetings.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has a 24-2-1 record against the Browns since 2004 but was intercepted four times in the playoff game. It was a performance that had him contemplating retirement.

Following a poor start to the 2021 season, Roethlisberger has played better in the last two games. It should help that right tackle Zach Banner is expected to make his season debut after needing more than a year to recover from knee surgery.

Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield’s string of 53 consecutive starts ended last week. He has a broken bone in his left (non-throwing shoulder) but has practiced this week while wearing a stabilizing harness.

Veteran backup Case Keenum was 21-of-33 passing for 199 yards and one touchdown against the Broncos. It is instructive to note Keenum led the Vikings to the NFC Championship Gane in 2017 when current Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski was Minnesota’s quarterbacks coach.

The Browns showed off their running back depth with Johnson, who once worked on a fishing boat while out of professional football. His performance enabled Cleveland to continue to lead the NFL in rushing.

The Steelers-Browns Bets We Like

Steelers +3.5 (-110) Barstool

A pretty strong case can be made that the Browns have a better team than the Steelers.

Regardless of coach Mike Tomlin trying to downplay the angle, the Steelers surely will be motivated to face their former punching bags. The Steelers are also playing with more confidence and will keep things close against their former punching bags.

Najee Harris over 105.5 rushing and receiving yards (-115) MGM Grand

Thanks in part to improved play by the offensive line, the Steelers rookie running back is starting to make a big impact. He had a combined 127 yards on 30 touches in the Steelers’ last game.

This is a bit of a risky pick as the Browns are second in the league in total defense, but Harris is living up to his billing as a first-round draft pick.

Prediction

This rivalry is no longer one-sided. Yet the Steelers won’t play nearly as poorly against the Browns this time around. Cleveland, though, wins it on a late field goal.
