Steelers Preview

The Steelers got buried by the Chiefs in the regular season, falling behind 23-0 at halftime then seeing the deficit reaching as much as 33 points in the second half.

The Chiefs held just a 381-303 edge in total yards but forced the Steelers into three turnovers, two lost fumbles, and an interception. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 23 of 30 passes and 258 yards and three touchdowns for the Chiefs while Ben Roethlisberger was 23 of 39 for 159 yards, a TD, and the pick.

The most impressive aspect of the Chiefs’ victory was winning by four touchdowns despite missing tight end Travis Kelce, who finished the regular season with 92 catches for 1,125 yards and nine touchdowns. He was in COVID-19 protocols.

Leading receiver Tyreek Hill missed the entire week of the practice leading up to the game because of the protocols and was a non-factor with two receptions for 19 yards. Hill set the franchise record for receptions this season with 111 for 1,239 yards and nine scores.

With Kelce and Hill healthy for the rematch, the Steelers’ defense will have its hands full. To have any chance of slowing the Chiefs, the Steelers will need outside linebacker T.J. Watt to consistently harass Mahomes after tying the NFL record with 22 ½ sacks in the regular season.

Watt was limited by one tackle by the Chiefs in the regular season, though.

The Chiefs blew out the Steelers just three weeks ago and it’s hard to imagine this game being any closer with Kelce and Hill at full health.

Steelers Prediction

The Chiefs have stumbled since running their winning streak to eight games by beating the Steelers. Kansas City then lost to the Bengals in Cincinnati and barely beat the Broncos in Denver.

However, it’s the playoff now and the intensity goes up a notch. The Chiefs won’t stumble against an opponent fortunate to be in the playoffs.
