Breaking: Pittsburgh Submits Interest to Host 2028 World Cup of Hockey

The City of Pittsburgh will submit a letter of interest to the NHL regarding hosting the 2028 World Cup of Hockey.
Following the Four Nations Face-Off success last February, the NHL will be incorporating the World Cup to alternate with the Olympics every two years, so each will be on a four-year rotation. Pittsburgh is vying for hosting duties in 2028, as confirmed by our partners at WPXI TV and sports anchor Jenna Harner.
Both Boston and Montreal hosted the Four Nations tournament. Two cities are expected to host the tournament in February 2028, through round-robin and quarterfinal rounds, then one city will host the semi-finals and the championship game.
I’ve confirmed the City of Pittsburgh will be submitting an expression of interest to the NHL and NHLPA to be a host city for the 2028 World Cup of Hockey.

There will be 17 games over 12 days.
Pittsburgh obviously meets the NHL’s criteria of NHL-worth facilities. The league has set July 18 as the deadline for North American cities and July 30 for international markets. Following the interest phase, the NHL and NHLPA will open the Request for Proposals phase. The winning cities will be announced in the first quarter of 2026.
The NHL launched the selection process Thursday morning. The tournament will be an eight-team tournament.
