(UPDATE) Scorers Take Away Crosby Record Breaking Assist
ELMONT, NY — At this stage of his career, Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has firmly established himself as one of the all-time greats, and each record he chases eclipses another all-time great. Such was the case Saturday against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena.
UPDATE: Official scorers later removed Crosby’s assist. But we’ll keep the story up because Crosby is likely to break the record soon enough.
Beneath the banners of other All-Timers, such as Mike Bossy, Crosby broke Mario Lemieux’s Penguins franchise assisted record when he helped Michael Bunting’s first-period power-play goal. It was Crosby’s 1034th career assist. All, of course, have been with the Penguins.
Crosby tied the franchise record before the NHL holiday break when he popped for three assists in the first period against the Philadelphia Flyers, 1033 assists.
The Penguins and Islanders ended the first period tied 1-1.
