In conjunction with its players including Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby and former Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, hockey equipment company CCM is donating 500,000 masks to Canadian healthcare workers as part of worldwide efforts to slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). Sportsnet reporter Chris Johnston tweeted the donation on Wednesday morning.

As hospitals around the world deal with a flood of cases, the supply of surgical masks has been depleted. CCM, along with their players, donated the surgical masks from the supply in the CCM Asian production factories.

Crosby and Fleury are joined by fellow CCM players in being a part of the donation. The list of players includes notables Mat Barzal, Patrice Bergeron, Brock Boeser, women’s hockey star Kendall Coyne Schoefield, Alex DeBrincat, Matt Duchesne, Jonathan Huberdeau, Seth Jones, Nathan MacKinnon, Connor McDavid, and Alex Ovechkin. You can see the full list of players in Johnston’s tweet, below.

According to updated statistics and government reporting, Canada experienced a spike in coronavirus diagnoses and deaths this week.

CCM is headquartered in St. Laurent, QC. In 2017, Addidas sold the company to private investors for $100 million. In 1899, the four leading Canadian bicycle manufacturers merged to form CCM. However, they did so just before the mass production of automobiles. In 1905, the company switched to manufacturing hockey skates using leftover steel from bicycle and automobile manufacturing.

Sidney Crosby was part of the first NHL video chat which occurred in late March. Crosby made headlines when he admitted he wouldn’t mind if the NHL season to resumed, beginning with the playoffs. That is one of several scenarios which the NHL is discussing as leagues seek the best return-to-play scenarios.
