There will be fewer good stories in sports than what the 2021 Denmark national team has given us in Eurocup this year.

Surely you know the bullet points by now. Star middlefielder Christian Eriksen collapses on the pitch in his first match. Denmark loses to cellar-dwelling Finland. Denmark loses to Belgium. The Danes combine for eight goals to devour Russia and Wales and land in this spot – the odds-on betting favorite in this group of eight match with Czech Republic.

There aren’t any flashy names on this Denmark roster. Like Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku or England’s Wayne Rooney, you’re not going to find anything close to a household name here. But Denmark’s ability to maintain possession, their defensive prowess, and a spirit and desire that no other can seem to encapsulate, seems to be the perfect three-pronged attack that makes them one of the top betting favorites to win the Eurocup, something the Red and Whites haven’t done since 1992.

Kasper Dolberg and Martin Braithwaite, who lead the way for Denmark offensively, will have that much deeper of a team in Azerbaijan Saturday, as three big names, including Yussuf Poulsen, are active and ready to return to the lineup. The Leipzig striker Poulsen, who has two goals already in Eurocup competition, will likely sub into this game and add even more firepower to the Dane’s consistent, possession-heavy offensive attack.

Czech Republic will also have the likes of a key starter returning to the lineup in defender Jan Boril, who was serving a suspension in his team’s remarkable 2-0 win over the Netherlands in the Eurocup round of 16.

Much like Denmark, the road for Czech Republic to reach the knockout stage was not easy, as a draw to Croatia and a 1-0 loss to England followed a Eurocup opening win over Scotland.

The Czechs were pitted against one of the top favorites in Netherlands in the opening round of the Eurocup knockout stage, and came out a 2-0 victor as a heavy betting underdog (+650 at Draft Kings).

A large reason for the Czech Republic’s historic win was due to a red card issued to the Netherlands in the 55th minute of play. Dominating up to that point, the Dutch could not handle being down a man and eventually surrendered the lead in the 68th minute on Tomas Holes finish. Patrik Schick would finish off the Netherlands in the 80th minute with an insurmountable insurance goal.

The Czechs are led by the Holes/Schick tandem, who have combined for all five goals (four for Schick) scored by the team in Eurocup play.

The Czechs may not score in droves, but they certainly make up for it with healthy, bend-don’t-break defense. They are the dentists of Eurocup: they mill, and drill and root canal their way to defensive, low scoring efforts, and with Boril back in the lineup, it just makes that defensive wall that much stronger.

Expect Denmark to take care of the ball, take pride in their possessions but not take as many chances with dangerous attacks, as the Czechs can and will make teams that press in the offensive end pay in transition.

No first half goals (+155 – DraftKings)

For all of the reasons mentioned above is why we would take such a risky bet in the first 45 minutes.

Netherlands threw the kitchen sink at the Czechs in the first half of Sunday’s game. Six corner kicks for the Dutch, nearly 70% possession and a slew of dangerous attacks – all of which led to a clean sheet for both squads in the first 45 minutes. The Danes managed to punch one first half goal through on Wales in their last Saturday, though Denmark will certainly be colliding with a much more consistent defensive force than the Welch in Azerbaijan today.

Denmark To qualify for the next round (-180 – FanDuel)

It’s not always fun to pay this kind of juice on a bet, but you must believe that the value is much better than taking Denmark (+112) to win in regulation. With this safety valve involved, you can still have a winning ticket in the two 15-minute overtime periods and penalty kicks, as opposed to hoping and praying that the Danes pull it off in the first 90 minutes of action.

Half with most goals: Second Half (+112 – FanDuel)

Team to score the first goal: Denmark (-135 – FanDuel)

Who exactly knows when it will happen, but someone from Denmark is going to tickle the twine in the second half of Saturday’s match. It’s much too risky to ever bet on a single player to score, as the team effort aspect makes it such a volatile play, but Denmark will break down the Czechs and find the back of the net first in this match.

At the end of the day, Denmark can and will wear down the Czechs. They have the deeper offensive team. They can pass the ball better; they can secure the ball better and they know how to limit their opponent’s attacks. Emotions are running high for the Danes, but it’s a remarkably composed and controlled emotional high for this squad, and there is no question in my mind that we will see the Red and Whites in the Eurocup Championship Game later this month.
