Now they will get more of him as the rookie quarterback makes his first start when the Steelers visit the Buffalo Bills at 1 p.m. Sunday at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y. Pickett replaced Mitch Trubisky to start the second half with the Steelers trailing 10-6. The first-round draft pick played well in spots but could not stop his team’s losing streak from reaching three games as the Steelers fell 24-20 to the New York Jets at Heinz Field.

The Steelers (1-3) are two-touchdown underdogs against the Bills, who the oddsmakers have installed as favorites to win the Super Bowl. Buffalo (3-1) rallied from a 17-point deficit on the road last week to beat the Baltimore Ravens 23-20.

Pickett became the first quarterback in NFL history to rush for two touchdowns in his debut. He also completed 10 of 13 passes for 120 yards.

The downside was all three of Pickett’s incompletions resulted in interceptions. The most pivotal pick set up the Jets’ winning touchdown, which came on Breece Hall’s 2-yard run with 16 seconds left.

Pickett will be facing a considerably more difficult defense this week. The Bills lead the NFL in total defense and pass defense, are second in scoring defense and third in run defense.

So far this season, the Bills have not given up 300 total yards in a game. They have allowed 200 passing yards just once when the Los Angeles Rams’ Matthew Stafford had 240 in Buffalo’s season-opening win.

The Bills also lead the AFC with 13 sacks. Safety Jordan Poyer tops the league with four interceptions.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, though, believes it is time to turn the offense over to Pickett. The Steelers are 30^th among the 32 NFL teams in total yards.

The Bills’ offense is just as good as its defense, led by quarterback Josh Allen. Buffalo is second in passing and third overall.

Conversely, the Steelers are being outgained by over 100 yards a game. Stopping Allen will be a tall task as reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt will again be missing because of a pectoral injury.

One break the Steelers might catch is that Bills’ receiving corps is thinned by injuries. However, Stefon Diggs has given the Steelers problems since the Bills acquired him from the Minnesota Vikings in a trade as he has 19 catches for 199 yards in two games.

Pittsburgh Steelers Prediction

Fans have visions of 2004 when Ben Roethlisberger replaced Tommy Maddox in the third game of the season and led the Steelers to a 15-1 regular season record and a berth in the AFC Championship Game.

However, the 2022 Steelers aren’t nearly as talented as the ’04 team. And history suggests Pickett could be in for a long day as the Steelers are 5-20-1 in games in which their quarterback makes his first NFL start.
