The matchup won’t have the luster it once had when the Pittsburgh Steelers host the New England Patriots at 1 p.m. Sunday in their home opener at Acrisure Stadium.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger retired at the end of last season. His longtime Patriots counterpart Tom Brady bolted to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency prior to the 2020 season.

This will mark the first time since 1998 that the teams meet without either player on the roster. Furthermore, this will also be the first matchup between the franchises since ’98 that hasn’t been played in prime time or the late-afternoon window on Sunday.

And since the last time the Steelers and Patriots played in 2019, Pittsburgh has just three starters remaining. They are defensive end Cam Hayward, linebacker Devin Bush and safety Terrell Edmunds.

Pittsburgh Steelers Preview

The Steelers are coming off a dramatic win in Week 1, beating the defending AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 in overtime on the road, to begin life without Big Ben. Meanwhile, the Patriots lost to the Dolphins 20-7 in Miami.

The Steelers will be without star edge rusher T.J. Watt, who was placed on injured reserve Thursday with a left pectoral injury. Malik Reed will likely take the place of Watt, who was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year last season.

Reed was acquired from the Denver Broncos in a trade last month. He had 15 sacks in three seasons in Denver and was tasked with replacing Von Miller in 2020 when the star linebacker was injured.

The Steelers may be able to get by without Watt against a Patriots offense that was quite pedestrian on opening day. They managed just one touchdown with second-year quarterback Mac Jones, who sustained a back injury during the game but is expected to play Sunday.

Jones completed 21 of 30 passes for 213 yards and one touchdown while also being intercepted once. The lone TD capped a 15-play, 92-yard drive and came on a 6-yard pass to Ty Montgomery.

The Steelers could use another big game from safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Against the Bengals, he returned an interception for a touchdown and blocked what would have been a game-winning extra point at the end of regulation.

Mitch Trubisky was a lackluster 21-of-38 passing for 194 yards and a TD in his Steelers’ debut. However, the Steelers offset that by intercepting Joe Burrow four times and recovering a Bengals’ fumble.

The Steelers could use better play from its revamped offensive line. Trubisky was sacked three times by the Bengals and Najee Harris managed just 23 yards rushing on 10 carries.

Pittsburgh Steelers Prediction

The Patriots are 12-4 against the Steelers since Bill Belichick became coach in 2020. Belichick is 8-3 against Steelers coach Mike Tomlin.

The Steelers are 16-5 in home openers at Acrisure Stadium. It is a bit surprising they are underdogs in this one since a case can be made that they are as good or better than the Patriots.
