Jarry Wins WBS Debut, Named No. 1 Star
It’s been several years since Tristan Jarry started a game for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. As part of the ongoing melodrama involving Jarry’s struggles and the Pittsburgh Penguins’ crowded crease, the team assigned Jarry to WBS Saturday morning on a conditioning assignment.
Jarry, 29, promptly stopped 32 of 34 shots and earned the No. 1 star as WBS beat the Syracuse Crunch 3-2 at Mohegan Sun Arena. Conditioning assignments can last up to 14 days.
It was the first time since the 2018-19 season that Jarry played for WBS. The following season, he nudged ahead of Casey DeSmith for the Penguin’s backup role and soon afterward muscled past starter Matt Murray for the No. 1 job. The following summer, the Penguins traded Murray to the Ottawa Senators, and Jarry has been the Penguins’ starting goalie ever since.
However, struggles at the end of last season, followed by immediate struggles this season, relegated Jarry to third goalie behind Joel Blomqvist and Alex Nedeljkovic.
Penguins prospect Tristan Broz scored a goal and registered an assist. He was the No. 2 star. Sam Poulin scored his second goal of the season, and Emil Bemstrom had a pair of assists in the winning effort.
That is great news. I think everyone should agree on that.
Good for him. I’m genuinely happy for him. But I don’t see how he ever earns his teammates’ trust again. They have to move on from him.
I think the question is should he trust his teammates. Ken Dryden, Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur combined would have been getting killed by terrible play in front of the net by the defense and by the odd man rushes being allowed. EK65 should just be called E-5 at this point, MP28 Humpty Dumpty and LeTang is way way off with his passing and his carrying the puck. Add to that the lack of effort by the forwards on the top 2 lines to fill the gaps and Jarry is the one who should be pissed.
And the current tandem, who just allowed 16 goals in 4 games (not counting WPG empty netter or the Calgary shootout), have the trust of their teammates?
Good for him. Humility is a virtue. May he continue and come back better.
Thanks, Dan. I feel so much better now.
I hope Jarry can improve his trade value while at WB/S. Personally, I think he’s DONE at Pittsburgh!
Jarry wasn’t the problem. At minimum Karlsson is. You need a team in front of the goalie to play. How is it working out for Ned? I hope Jarry gets traded and becomes a top 5 goalie. He deserves it and so does the Pen’s fan and media.
100% agree
Great to see the $5.375M goalie dominate the American Hockey League. Dude may have found his niche there.
Amazed at all the bush league comments by guys who couldn’t stop a puck if it was handed to you. How about the maturity to not throw his team under the bus or downright chase and tackle them? Or the humility to do what may be best for him and the team if he can get right? Jarry was an All-Star legitimately for 2 years…and I agree he has fallen apart. But everyone has blind spots and holes and if the rest of the team had half the balls and less ego to do the same thing he is doing,… Read more »
