‘Lots of Interest’: Why Dubas Declined to Trade Rakell, Grzelcyk

Published

on

Pittsburgh Penguins, Kyle Dubas

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Rickard Rakell will remain in Las Vegas for another few hours on Saturday for a practice at the Vegas Golden Knights’ practice rink.

Just how much this team can improve with any amount of practice is another matter.

Fans should be under no illusions or pretense. A rebuild is underway. It’s not a tear-it-down rebuild but is beginning to teeter on a “watch it crumble” sort of revamp.

A quick gander upon the lineup Friday night might have elicited far more questions than is customary in these parts. The most notable query would surely have been about the identity and qualifications of those filling parts of the Penguins lineup.

But Rakell remains with the Penguins. Despite a strong seller’s market at the NHL trade deadline Friday, Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas did not trade the winger.

The reasons to keep Rakell were abundantly clear Friday night in the Penguins’ 4-0 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights. If not for the Penguins’ top line with Rakell, Sidney Crosby, and Bryan Rust, the game would have been an ugly beatdown uncomfortable to watch for even the most bloodthirsty UFC fans.

Not that there wasn’t strong interest in Rakell, but the Penguins need to keep a few players.

“He is a big part of our program. I think everyone has seen this year–he’s got a long history of the type of player that he is–We see him every day, and the type of person that he is, as well,” Dubas said. “When you have players that perform that way on a game-in and game-out basis, that show the ability to respond when things don’t go well and then can propel themselves back into being near the top of the league and perform at (a high level), that’s not something you (give up), especially when you have them signed.

“(When) they want to be a part of the community, the program, and know the path we’re on and want to bring the team back into contention, I would say you don’t just push that out the door because that’s what (fans) want. You have to do what’s right for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and for us, having Rickard Rakell was the right thing to do.”

Rakell is one goal from the third 30-goal campaign of his career. His 40-goal pace has slowed in recent weeks, and he’ll likely only finish in the mid-30s, which would have placed him among the top available wingers at the deadline. Only Mikko Rantanen, who finished a multiple trade odyssey that began with Colorado in January and landed with the Dallas Stars Friday, was a more productive option than Rakell.

Enormous contract demands hampered Rantanen’s latest trade, but he settled for the low, low price of $12 million per year over eight years before the trade was completed.

Rakell is signed for three more seasons at comparable peanuts, only $5 million per season. While veterans with term were once taboo trade targets, a productive winger with cost certainty in a rising cap world becomes increasingly valuable.

And Dubas is going to hold onto that value.

“Regarding the marketplace, there was lots of interest in Rakell,” admitted Dubas. “We just decided that where we are at, his value to us, the term remaining on his contract, the way that he’s played, and the player that he is, it was in the best interest of the team to have him remain. ”

Matt Grzelcyk

One of the surprises of the Penguins’ trade deadline day was keeping defenseman Matt Grzelcyk, a pending unrestricted free agent.

Based on Dubas’s comments, the decision was less his than it was the other 31 GMs who didn’t come to the table with an offer of market value.

“There was interest–teams kicking tires–but in the end, we got through the deadline, and he remains a member of our team,” said Dubas. “We expected him to have a strong season when (we signed him), and we pledged that we’d give him the opportunity to get things back rolling, and he’s taken advantage of that–and we’ll push him to do so through the last stretch of the year.”

Dubas’s comments also did not mention or even hint at a new contract for Grzelcyk.

Dont push them out the door? What about Jake????

Apples and oranges. Rakell has 3 years remaining on an affordable deal. Jake was a UFA looking for 8 years at big money.
Jake says he wanted to stay but I seriously doubt that he was giving a big hometown discount to do so.

But to be fair, the Penguins could’ve have afforded and signed Jake Guentzel for $9 million per year, but Dubas traded for Karlsson + signed Graves + re-signed Jarry = 20 million dollars.

Totally agree – the club has consistently spent the money on the wrong players the past 5 years. The core has basically outperformed their contracts thus far. The decisions on the supporting cast have been terrible.

Correct. Jake didn’t fit the competitive window. Would have been a much different story if he was 23, or if he only wanted a 2-year extension.

Playoff bound Tampa Bay Lightning probably disagrees with you and says, “Thank you Kyle Dubas!” Jake Guentzel’s 32 goals and 31 assists and projected 42 goals and 40 assists for this season smile and say, “Hold my beer!” Re-signing Jeff Carter and Kasperi Kapanen, leaving Jared McCann unprotected in the expansion draft, not re-signing Evan Rodrigues, trading Mike Matheson for Jeff Petry, trading John Marino for Ty Smith, replacing Jason Zucker with Reilly Smith, not trying to find a way to sign Vincent Trocheck for the $5.625 million he got from the NY Rangers but instead signing Ryan Graves for… Read more »

Okay let’s put this to bed: I don’t want to hear anything more about McCann as the fanbase was quite clear in not wanting him back. Erod got screwed by his agent. Trocheck is a bum and not worth the money he’s getting. Jarry was the best goalie avaliable but apparently you fail to notice that. EK was worth the gamble but again your Brain can’t comprehend it but its fine cause that has become a common theme amongst Pens Fans.

So you’re saying Hextall left McCann unprotected at age 23 because of the fanbase? Maybe that’s why he’s no longer GM. Since Jared McCann left Pittsburgh, he’s scored 112 goals (with 17 games left) over the past 5 seasons; not bad for 28 years old….You say Erik Karlsson is “worth the gamble”? According to statmuse.com, he’s 2nd in the NHL in Giveaways this season with a 120!!! He’s 2 behind leader MacKenzie Weegar of Calgary who has 122!!! I’m confident that EK will surpass him. Did you know that at age 34, Erik Karlsson is 4th in NHL All-Time Giveaways… Read more »

McCann is scoring cause there is no pressure on him and he has a Top 6 role with the kraken. If McCann were on any other team he’d be a 3rd line player and you know that YinzerinFL. If they don’t get EK how do get rid of the contracts of both Petry and Matheson without taking on deals that are far worse that of Karlsson?

Remember when Rakell was competing with Reilly Smith for 2nd line minutes with Malkin. When he reverts back to that level of play, KD will regret not moving him yesterday…

Pittsburgh fans need to boycott the team and stop going to games. This embarrassment and the joke the team is due to the coaching change that needed to happen 5 years ago is a disgrace to this city

Dude, what?
Boycott the Pirates of any of the Pittsburgh teams. Eventually the Penguins were going to be bad… sucks it’s right now, but all teams have to rebuild eventually.
With 3 cups this century, they get a pass.

Before boycotting go back and look at Pens history before Mario and Sid and a cast of wonderfully gifted players! Being an older fan who suffered through some terrible teams until Stanley Cup win over North Stars I feel blessed to have been alive to see these great players and teams, hell the Pirates in all their years only have five World Series wins! It is a rebuild so live with it!!

The D is in shambles from top to bottom. This is what happens when all you want is “puck-moving defensemen.” Nobody understands or cares to play positional D. And they are all sub-par on the physicality scale. They put the goalies in a shooting gallery environment every game. Doug Wilson is a HOFer. He ought to be the one to do a complete retool of the D. Fire Andy Chiodo before he ruins Murashov and Larsson on top of all the others who have regressed under his watch. Makes sure we have the strongest scouting department possible to maximize the… Read more »

I think he did fine. The cap is rising so no reason to push out Rust or Rakell on team friendly contracts. Karlsson is easier done in the offseason. Letang seems to be willing to go as well. The total work starting with Jake trade has brought in picks and prospects. Now to try and put the right bodies on the team.

Who was not moved? He made a ton of trades, probably the most in the NHL and you don’t think he did enough? The only person I think he should have traded was Grz even if it was for a 5th, but didn’t happen.

Otherwise pretty happy. Let’s see what he can do in the offseason. If he can trade Jarry. Graves and Karl then it is officially a reset

Was not expecting Bunting to be moved. In addition to Glass and Beau, others that should have been moved for peanuts are Griz, Hayes, Heinen, Acciari, and Nieto. That’s what I meant by Dubas not doing enough. Of course, all of these wouldn’t be moved at one time, but some should have been.

The Senators made pair of shrewd acquisitions in Cousins and Zetterlund that went under the radar. Both are top six forwards with size who excel at 5 on 5, an area in which the Penguins have sucked all season. My guess is that Duby inquired about both but couldn’t make it happen for whatever reason.

Duby seems to have spent most of the efforts nibbling around the outside of measurable change/improvements. Perhaps that was from influence from the team? Idk. Not in the room nor have his inside information.

If I was Duby, I wouldn’t trade with No Neck Trotz again. When Trotz criticized the player (Novak) he traded, he effectively threw the GM under the bus. Trotz doesn’t need to grow just a neck. He needs to grow a spine as well.

All I read here is “Dubas thinks he can get a better Rakell return in the off season”. I hope he’s right
