The Pittsburgh Penguins sent all eligible players back to their junior teams, Thursday, including 2018 second-round pick Calen Addison (Lethbridge) and center prospect Jordy Bellerive (Lethbridge). The Penguins also assigned several players, including Freddie Tiffels and Dane Birks to the Penguins American Hockey League affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

The moves trimmed the Penguins camp roster to 45 in advance of the Penguins’ two preseason home games this weekend.

Also returned to their junior teams were forwards, 2018 fifth-rounder Justin Almeida (Moose Jaw) and 2017 fifth-round pick Jan Drozg (Shawinigan) and goaltender Alex D’Orio (Saint John). Defenseman Antti Palojarvi was returned to Lukko of Finland’s SM-Liiga.

Sent to the WBS Penguins camp were forwards Tiffels, Troy Josephs, defensemen Birks, Joe Masonius, and goaltender Anthony Peters.

Addison was the Penguins standout prospect in the rookie tournament and in training camp. He had an assist on Ryan Haggerty’s third period goal against Detroit, Wednesday night. PHN has detailed Addison’s game. Penguins assistant coach Mark Recchi said, “he’s going to be a heckuva player.”

Here is the remaining Penguins camp roster.

The Penguins will play back-to-back afternoon home games this weekend. They host the Columbus Blue Jackets, Saturday, at 3 p.m. and the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday at 3 p.m. Sunday’s game against Detroit is the Pens’ eighth annual “Free Game for Kids.”

Saturday’s game against the Blue Jackets will be broadcast by AT&T SportsNet. The Penguins will stream Sunday’s game versus the Red Wings on pittsburghpenguins.com
