The Pittsburgh Penguins announced their new radio play-by-play announcer Tuesday morning. Joe Brand will replace Steve Mears, who left the organization earlier this summer to become the TV announcer for the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Brand, 33, spent the previous three seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks as their studio host and fill-in play-by-play broadcaster. He hosted the pre-game, intermission, and post-game shows for all of Chicago’s regular-season games and hosted a weekly radio show.

Phil Bourque will remain the primary radio color analyst. Paul Steigerwald will return as pre and post-game host.

Brand also called select Chicago White Sox games and has been a play-by-play broadcaster for collegiate games, as well.

“We are excited to welcome Joe Brand to the Penguins family and introduce him to the best fans in hockey,” said Penguins president of business operations Kevin Acklin. “The Penguins have been fortunate to have some of the best voices to ever call the game to sit in that chair, and we look forward to Joe making his own mark here in Pittsburgh.”

The Blackhawks and White Sox produced two of the worst (the worst?) broadcasts in pro team sports over the last few seasons. Mike Lange help us.

How about TV? Getzoff is meh, Armstrong horrible, Hailey took Potash position because of her gender, and she is worse than horrible. Athletes in broadcasting usually just suck! Positive note: was spoiled listening to the great Mike Lange!
