Pittsburgh Penguins president of hockey operations and GM Kyle Dubas is the gift that keeps on giving. Not only has Dubas provided interesting fodder into August, but the ripples of his moves are providing additional stories and fallout in other NHL cities. The NHL trade winds are swirling around Jeff Petry because neither the Montreal Canadiens nor Petry has publicly commented after the trade. Also in the Daily, the Washington Capitals are still chumming the trade waters but finding no fish, and an Indycar driver has accused Red Wings winger Daniel Sprong of assault and posted the pictures.

A quick site note: we think we’ve untangled most of the subscription issues that popped up this week and are finally ready to unveil a new subscription package. If you have any issues logging on, first make sure to refresh the page–that seems to have been most of the issues we encountered.

I also want to thank Paul Zeise. Last night, I rolled out to Clark’s Restaurant on McKnight Rd. to do a couple of segments on 93-7 the Fan with Paul, but 30 minutes turned into over an hour. Our conversation veered from Karlsson and Jeff Carter to setting pants on fire to win a lip sync contest. I had a ball. I think it was good radio, and hopefully a few of you enjoyed it.

I do miss radio from time to time…

Pittsburgh Penguins:

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Simple question. Detailed answer. With Erik Karlsson, are the Penguins Stanley Cup contenders?

RDS: Our Marc Dumont at Montreal Hockey Now has been all over this topic, and RDS is catching on, too. One week after the trade, the Canadiens haven’t made Jeff Petry or Casey DeSmith available to the media yet. Nor has GM Kent Hughes spoken. The NHL trade chatter is getting loud.

Now former Penguins prospect Nathan Legare spoke at length to RDS after the trade.

Legare would have been a fun guy to have around in Pittsburgh. He’s got a little edge but usually in a fun way. I really hope he figures it out and makes it to the show.

NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now:

Detroit Hockey Now: The story of the day — An Indycar driver has posted the pictures and accused Daniel Sprong of assault.

It wasn’t just a little skirmish, and Indycar drivers are not exactly the biggest guys on the planet.

Montreal Hockey Now: I might have posted this story a few days ago, but it’s gaining steam. The Dallas Stars are believed to be interested in Jeff Petry.

For the record, PHN reported over the winter that Dallas had some interest in Petry. However, at least one outlet made a point to refute that with just a little shade thrown our way. Now it seems common knowledge, as Chris Johnston reported it this week, too. Moving on…

Washington Hockey Now: The Capitals are trying to keep pace in the Metro Division and move some big names with big contracts to get scoring help. GM Brian MacLellan is still pushing for a big Capitals trade.

Philly Hockey Now: A great read here — Why Matvei Michkov, the second-best talent in the draft, was available for the Philadelphia Flyers.

Carolina Hockey Now: The Hurricanes are signing Caleb Jones.

Florida Hockey Now: Are the Eastern Conference champs (but Stanley Cup “runners up”), Florida Panthers done in free agency?

Western Conference:

Colorado Hockey Now: We did this feature a few weeks ago, and it was a lot of fun. Here are the five Colorado Avalanche who don’t look right in other uniforms.

Nashville: GM David Poile has retired, but our folks in Nashville have been revisiting a lot of what Poile did for the Predators. They’re also having a bit of fun with the five worst Predators trades.

Vegas Golden Knights: 2023-24 expectations for Ivan Barbashev.

San Jose Hockey Now: What can the Flyers rebuild teach the San Jose Sharks?

Don’t trade a Norris winner for spare parts and a first?
