Dan’s Daily: Hyman Talks Continue with Oilers, Trade Freeze Lifted…

Published

on

NHL trade, pittsburgh penguins trade,

The NHL roster freeze ended on Thursday at 1 p.m. All hell was supposed to break loose, and we were supposed to learn of those little side-trades in Seatle Kraken GM Ron Francis’ desk drawer. At the stroke of 1, everyone waited for the NHL trade market to explode and learn of those Seattle trades, but…there were none. However, Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ron Hextall explained the Jared McCann trade and losing Brandon Tanev.

Also in the Daily, Zach Hyman and Edmonton Oilers are close to a mega-deal, the Chicago Blackhawks are pushing for the Seth Jones trade, and Rick Tocchet has offers.

So let me get this straight–Seattle set a very high NHL trade cost for teams to protect their best players, hoping to force teams to expose those players, then didn’t take them?? Somebody will have to explain the logic to me.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Pittsburgh Penguins lost two good NHL players to expansion week chaos. Penguins GM Ron Hextall explained the McCann-for-Filip Hallander trade and why he was OK losing two players.

And–The 2021-22 regular-season Penguins Schedule is out, which includes a two-week Olympic break.

Talks are ongoing for NHL players to participate in the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.

Side note: Tell me again why the world is willing to reward China for its horrendous human rights record, which includes millions jailed or “disappeared” for speaking against the communist government oppression and its COVID-19 coverup, including medical supply hoarding? But I digress.

NHL Trade Chatter

Philly: SILLY PRICES. The Flyers traded Shayne Gostisbehere to Arizona and gave them a 2022 second-rounder and seventh to take him. Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher spilled some of the ridiculous prices teams wanted to take on salary, including his blue-chip prospect.

NYI Hockey Now: The New York Islanders are interested in the bought-out American duo Zach Parise and Ryan Suter. GM Lou Lamoriello has an interest in BOTH.

Detroit: The Detroit Red Wings artful trader Steve Yzerman executed theft on the NHL trade front on Thursday. He plucked his goalie of the future, Alex Nedeljkovic, from the Carolina Hurricanes for merely a third-rounder.

TVA Sports (French Sports Television): Mild Penguins trade rumor–The Montreal Canadiens are linked to numerous players now that defenseman Shea Weber and perhaps Jonathan Drouin are likely headed to LTIR permanently. TVA linked Montreal to Arizona Coyotes center Christian Dvorak. Montreal is one of five teams they mentioned for Dvorak, including the Penguins.

The Dvorak interest is either a passing glance or a huge red flag on Malkin’s health. I’m not inclined to take it seriously yet.

Sportsnet: Elliotte Friedman is on it. The Chicago Blackhawks are pushing for Seth Jones. Ryan Suter is narrowing his decision, and Rick Tocchet has a few offers, including one to become the highest-paid assistant in the league.

TSN Insiders: As of writing, there is still no NHL trade call between Edmonton and Toronto for Zach Hyman, but it’s close. Edmonton is going to give Hyman a huge contract. Also, the Insiders discussed Tampa Bay trying to dump Tyler Johnson and the Canadian hunt for defensemen.

For what it’s worth, TSN analyst Craig Button believes Connor McDavid will score 150 points with Hyman riding shotgun. That would be Wayne or Mario level scoring…

NHL News & National Hockey Now

Vegas: Pending UFA and top-pair defenseman Alec Martinez is mulling over an offer from the Vegas Golden Knights.

Boston: Bruins GM Don Sweeney has been big game hunting on the NHL trade market for over a year. Why has he been so hesitant?

Montreal Gazette: GM Marc Bergevin admitted Shea Weber’s career is likely over.

Colorado: Matt Calvert was a big part of the intense Penguins-Columbus Blue Jackets rivalry before going to Colorado. On Thursday, Calvert called it a career.

Washington: All 32 NHL schedules dropped on Thursday night. Sammi Silber broke down the Washington Capitals schedule, which may or may not include a few more slobberknockers with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Florida: Want to catch some sun and a cheap hockey game this winter? Here’s the Florida Panthers schedule.

San Jose: Want free hockey cards for you or the kids? Saturday is Upper Deck Hockey Card day, and they’re giving away free packs. Pretty cool!
