Pittsburgh Penguins, Vancouver Canucks game

VANCOUVER — The Pittsburgh Penguins (3-5-1) are winless in their last four and have lost three of those games in regulation, including an ugly 4-0 no-show loss to the Edmonton Oilers Friday at Rogers Place. Saturday, the Penguins finish their four-game trip by facing the Vancouver Canucks (3-1-2) at Rogers Arena.

The puck drops tonight just after 10 p.m. ET.

The Penguins are in the midst of a rough patch, and that might be putting it mildly. Coach Mike Sullivan didn’t angrily rip his team following the loss to Edmonton, but there weren’t any cookies and milk, either.

“It was concerning because we’re just not good enough right now. We didn’t play hard enough. We didn’t play together as a group (and) we weren’t good enough,” said the Penguins coach.

The Penguins had few, if any, highlights but got a sparkling performance from rookie goalie Joel Blomqvist, who stopped 46 of the 50 shots he faced. By the end of the game, Edmonton was toying with the Penguins and attempting to get Zach Hyman his first goal of the season.

The Penguins increased their shot total to 27 with a few chances in garbage time, but they were again outclassed in Edmonton.

Vancouver has won three in a row, beating the Florida Panthers and Philadelphia Flyers on the road and the Chicago Blackhawks at home. They have been off since Tuesday, when they beat Chicago, while the Penguins are finishing another set of back-to-back games.

Brock Boeser leads the team with four goals, and four Vancouver players are tied for the team lead with six points (Boeser, J.T. Miller, Connor Garland, Quinn Hughes).

The Penguins’ news Saturday was that they were assigning goalie Tristan Jarry to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL on a conditioning assignment, which can last up to 14 days.

Sullivan may have a few line changes in store, but due to the back-to-back games, there was no morning skate. Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic is expected to start.
