Pittsburgh Penguins trade: Patric Hornqvist Pittsburgh Penguins

It took a while. There may have been some lost contact in the middle, but it’s done. The Pittsburgh Penguins trade of 33-year-old fireball Patric Hornqvist to the Florida Panthers for talented but struggling 26-year-old defenseman, Mike Matheson, and fourth-line winger Colton Sceviour finally happened on Thursday afternoon.

The deal was without any salary holdbacks, one day after the teams agreed to a Hornqvist for Matheson deal, straight up. However, the original agreement stalled on issues over Florida’s ability to acquire insurance on Hornqvist’s contract.

“I just feel with the skill level that Mike has and the way Mike Sullivan handles players and the addition of Todd Reirden, that’s all going to be helpful to (Matheson),” Rutherford said. “He plays the way we like to play. I feel like he’ll fit into our system very nicely.”

The Penguins locker room is not happy, but we’ll get to that.
