Dan’s Daily: Flames Players Ran Fake Twitter Account, Penguins Rise or Fall?

Pittsburgh Penguins, NHL trade, Sean Monahan, Sidney Crosby

You’ll excuse me today. I still haven’t caught my breath from the final five minutes of the Backyard Brawl. If there is one big difference on the Pittsburgh sports scene, it is that “Pitting” no longer applies, and the Panthers find a way to win those wild, silly, improbable, talk-about-for-years games. One of the New York Rangers is putting himself on the NHL trade block. Sportsnet put the Pittsburgh Penguins on the wrong side of the dubious rise or fall list. What about a new contract for Tristan Jarry? The Dallas Stars owner took time out from poking at his star players to sign RFA goalie Jake Oettinger, and will the Arizona Coyotes sell out Mullet Arena?

The Pitt win had the wildest ending in Pittsburgh sports since …. the 2005 AFC Championship?

And a Flyers player had fake wedding photos? (Kind of, but you know there’s a real story coming…)

Pittsburgh Penguins / Sports Now Group PGH

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: What to do with Jarry, whose contract expires next summer. I think I’ve weighed in. Now Dave Molinari puts the Penguins’ goalie situation on the scales. Tristan Jarry.

Steelers Now: Alan Saunders had some fun — the Backyard Brawl power rankings. The best Steelers players from Pitt and WVU. Pittsburgh Steelers.

A couple of weeks ago, when I was on Final Word, I made Jaylen Warren my camp Cinderella, whose stock was way up. He made the team and achieved his NFL dream. Steelers.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now(+): Despite a complicated career, John Perrotto says Dave Parker deserves more than just the Pirates Hall of Fame. Pittsburgh Pirates.

It’s going to be a fun weekend of college football. DraftKings is offering a $200 bonus on a $5 bet. DraftKings bonus here.

NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now:

Philly Hockey Now: Has marriage affected center Scott Laughton? He reveals a secret about fake wedding photos (for a good reason, COVID). The Philadelphia Flyers summer.

Calgary Hockey Now: My favorite story of the day — There’s been a parody Twitter account run INSIDER the Flames locker room for years that makes fun of Sean Monahan. No one ever admitted ownership. Now that Monahan was traded to Montreal, he spilled the beans about who started it. Calgary Flames fun.

NY Post: Get your fresh trade rumors here! Larry Brooks writes that the New York Rangers are trying to trade frustrated forward Nils Lundkvist.

Vegas Hockey Now: It’s been a wild off-season in Las Vegas. Giving players away for nothing. Chasing others. Robin Lehner lost for the season. Owen Krepps asks — are the Vegas Golden Knights better?

Sportsnet: Rory Boylen picked a team in each division that could rise and a team that could fall. In the Metro, he picked the Penguins to fall?

Not sure I agree with that one.

Montreal Hockey Now: The Canadiens and Kirby Dach are getting close to a new contract for the talented forward. Montreal Canadiens news.

NYI Hockey Now: A walk down memory lane for the Islanders. Alexander Romanov will wear No. 28. Here are the past players to wear it for the New York Islanders.

TSN Video: Gord Miller has a good idea — exempt the Arizona Coyotes from the NHL revenue calculations. Will the Coyotes be able to sell out the 5,000-seat Mullet Arena?

So, so, so…embarrassing. Is the NHL hoping that there’s so little interest in the Coyotes that no one will notice they’re playing in a small college barn? Or will there be hundreds or even thousands of empty seats, EVEN IN a 5,000 arena? Perhaps AZ will give away free beer pong supplies, including the beer, to the first 4999 fans in attendance.

Vancouver Hockey Now: Rob Simpson opines the Canucks are a playoff team with NHL trade rumor darling J.T. Miller. So…just sign him already! The Vancouver Canucks season awaits.

ESPN: Jake Oettinger is now a rich kid. The Stars goalie signed a healthy three-year contract worth $12 million.
