Penguins Grades: F’s For Many in 5-2 Loss to Toronto (+)

Pittsburgh Penguins, Mike Sullivan

Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Matt Murray made several very good saves in the second period. The Pittsburgh Penguins largely didn’t challenge him in the first or third. After a brief season turnaround, the Penguins have again lost two in a row and they now have more regulation losses (7) than wins (6) this season.

The Penguins were humbled by the Maple Leafs, 5-2, at PPG Paints Arena on Tuesday.

Coach Mike Sullivan called the Penguins’ breakdowns “egregious.”

That would be a proper term for not covering players off the second-period faceoff and giving up a goal 11 seconds into the period to fall behind, 3-0. It also would be the proper term for not covering Mitch Marner near the Penguins’ net when two players missed their assignments, and a three-on-three became a one-on-none.

Murray was large in the second period. The Penguins were small in the others.
