Friedman Says Penguins Giving Dubas the Weekend, FSG at F1 Monaco
Don’t expect a decision or announcement on the Pittsburgh Penguins GM search today or this weekend. According to Elliotte Friedman and the latest 32 Thoughts podcast, the principals are taking the weekend.
Many in the Fenway Sports Group organization are in Monaco for the F1 race, the premier Grand Prix on the calendar. Friedman believes they’re letting Dubas take the holiday weekend to consider the job.
Friedman also referenced Mathieu Darche as a candidate but did not know if Steve Greeley remained in the picture.
The Dubas situation might not be cut and dried. Friedman and host Jeff Marek also brought up the Ottawa Senators’ situation. Multiple Canadian reporters, from Ken Weibe and Friedman at Sportsnet to Darren Dreger at TSN, have raised the possibility of Dubas joining the organization with the new Senators’ ownership.
“I think it’s obviously Dubas’ job if he wants it. And since it is not closed yet, I think some people think he’s keeping one eye on Ottawa,” said Friedman. “I think we’re getting really close to the end of (the Ottawa purchase). I heard there was some movement Thursday.”
The Pittsburgh Penguins organization has been without a GM or president of hockey operations since April 14 when FSG terminated GM Ron Hextall, AGM Chris Pryor, and president of hockey operations Brian Burke.

Pirates tickets to Dubas if he brings Matthews with him. Matthews would be a megastar here, not to mention the face of franchise beyond the Crosby years, which all but guarantees a competitive product and passionate fan base. That’s one of the biggest challenges that FSG faces in the future, maybe THE biggest of all.
How could they possibly afford Matthew’s contract? If they trade Guentzel or buyout Granlund, maybe they could sign him after next season. No way they have the assets to trade for a franchise player though.
Won’t happen, it would definitely shake up the Metro-division lmao? It doesn’t hurt to dream.
Guentzel, Rakell, Rust, Pettersson, draft picks . . . Also could get a third party involved. This is why GMs such as Duby get paid the big money. #FreeAuston

Dubas would be stupid to not want the Ottawa job. Loaded with young talent, bright young prospects. A dangerous organization with young talent. This organization is shot. Look at Red Sox and when is last time they won? This team is OLD, SOFT, SMALL. Who in this organization wanted to keep these guys together? New contracts,? After not winning playoff series for 4 yrs? Hextall had to listen!
Yes Hextall and Burke was brutal hires! Hextall horrible record, yet hired? When was last time Burke won ? Always talked about physical hockey players and teams ! Yet Penguins had a team of figure skaters. They had no power, like Rutherford. Let Sullivan be President and GM.
I have a hard time believing Burke did anything for the team. At all.
Jeff, that’s what I said! He had made comments before hired about Penguins being soft and small. Then was stunning That he got hired. Been a long time since being successful with a team. Got hired, and evident he done nothing. Hextall actually destroyed the Flyers during his time and they still have not recovered. Don’t know why Keith Jones hired? He’s been a broadcaster!
I mean, he couldn’t even tie his tie. 🙂 Anyway, at least he and GMRH are gone. That said, maybe Eddie O will end up as PHO. LOL!
