CRANBERRY — Jake Guentzel, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ first-line left winger, was one of five players to skate at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complext Thursday morning, a little more than an hour before the first scheduled on-ice session of training camp.

Guentzel is recovering from right ankleĀ  surgery, and Penguins officials have said they expect him to sit out at least the first couple weeks of the regular season.

His on-ice session lasted about 45 minutes.

It was not immediately clear whether the timetable for Guentzel’s return has changed, but he went through drills with no apparent difficulty.

The other players who skated with him, all of whom are believed to be nursing injuries, were Owen Pickering, Will Butcher, Raivis Ansons and Nolan Collins.
